Last week, camping at Grayland Beach State Park (near Westport, WA), I saw a glimmer of aluminum through the trees of the next camping loop. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a '67 Safari. What are the odds of having two '67 Safaris in the same campground? We met the owners - very nice people from my hometown. Made my day.

Another Airstream near Ottawa
Was camping last weekend in Fitzroy Provincial Park near Ottawa (Ontario) and while we were maneuvering through the park to get to our site, we noticed another Airstream through the trees.
Being busy setting up and dealing with the general shenanigans of 2 young boys, we didn't get around to taking a stroll and chatting that afternoon.
The next morning I was dealing with more shenanigans when I heard the rumblings of a truck/trailer combo going by our site - and looked around to see them leaving. Oh well.
Was a Safari, later model, maybe 22'?
But this makes me curious - what do most people do when noticing another Airstream in a campground? Do you mosey on over and introduce yourselves - and vice versa? I don't want to appear nosey or anything, just wanting to be friendly...
Either the Safari people didn't really see us as they drove by, or they were way more reserved/private than ourselves.
Cheers!

I tend to be a little forward. I will introduce myself if the other 'Streamers are outside their coach, but I won't go up to the door and knock.

I think that is just right. I might also go up if the door is wide open and it is obvious that the inhabitants are just "hangin' out". Strangely, I seem to give a vocal knock, knock as I am walking into the camp area. I try to have a little goodie in hand if it is evening. (Insert wine here)

Saturday, 11:15 am, going east on I-20 near Covington - a 90's maybe Safari 25/28 being pulled by a greenish/greyish Excursion, no Wally numbers or ghosts of them. Very nice looking trailer.
Hi, Michelle,
One never knows. I try to catch 'em outside, and I never try to "help" with hitching or unhitching. (And I don't WANT help, either.)
If you see them outside, holler over something like, "Hey, nice-looking trailer! What year is it?"
If you get a friendly response, THEN mosey over.
Also bear in mind that some Airstreamers are retired old coots and are allergic to any children except their own grandkids (and even that in very small doses).
Those are probably rare, but there are a lot of interesting/unusual characters out there in Airstreamland.

towing my airstream down 75 south through Kentucky and Tennessee, we passed an airstream 5th wheel. i've never seen one of those before. are they even aluminum? strange looking, mildly more attractive than a plain white 5th wheel, i guess... but hardly a "Streamlined trailer".

I for sure wouldn't dream of coming over and knocking on someone's door, but if they were relaxing by the campfire I may wave and say hi and compliment the trailer/motorhome from the path. 'Specially if it's an Airstream of course!
And I have to say that if anyone from the forums sees me at my campsite - come on over and say hi by all means.
We always have a selection of wines and beer (and some rather excellent Canadian coolers which have *real* vodka or rum in 'em, rather than the rather dubious malt liquor that the U.S. coolers have, but that's another topic) and various snackies. I enjoy meeting new people and general chitty chat about Airstreams and whatnot.
Cheers!

I think the Airstream 5th wheel was an outgrowth of the "Squarestream" of the '80's. It has fiberglass panels and they were quiet nicely built. I think most had stacked washer/dryers and sliders. They were heavy like most fivers. They were painted grey to kind of look like aluminum. But, no polishing! I think there may have been white ones at the end of production, though.
Anyway, they were called Legasy (sp?, that just doesn't look right) and were built until the mid-late '90's.

1963 Safari sighting
Last week I stopped at a home in Ringgold, Georgia when I saw folks lounging out in the yard. I'd been noticing an old Airstream for over a year parked in the back of their field. The owner was kind enough to show it to me, a 1963 Safari Land Yacht (SN 223D250 for anyone tracking Safari's). It was gutted except for the original storage curbside opposite where the double bed had been, and set up with bunks for a hunting trailer. Interior was in very poor condition before he purchased it but the skin was in amazingly good shape. Still tows and he uses it frequently, and was SO proud to show how he reproduced some of the metal hardware that was missing on the door. He had done a fine job. Wish I had my camera!

Unfortunately we're going to have to miss this one. Been to a couple before we got our Airstream and really enjoyed the fellowship. They are really a great bunch of folks.
We had purchased tickets to a special event that week end even before the Spring Fling when the date was set. That week end is a school holiday for our kids so we always plan a trip with the them well in advance to make sure we get the tickets.
I'm really hoping that there will be no conflict with the Spring Fling in '07. There seems to be more Georgians going to this one than there has been in the past. Well actually, I think this is probably the biggest crowd yet, period.

Here's a link to some photos that came up on this site of an Airstream 5th wheel for those who might not have seen one before:

I too want a Airstream badly, and being I am only 180 miles from Coos Bay and my sister lives in Coos Bay, I'll have her scout out the neglected Airstream. That made me sick, when I seen how that beautiful unique piece of art was just sitting there in a lot full of junk. How sad of a sight, but I will give it a excellent home with plenty of love if I can work my magic.

We're considering signing up for the WBCCI 2007 Baja Caravan (sold out & on the waiting list). Must be a popular caravan! Do you think a 28'er could make it on the Mexican Baja roads? My wife is less enthusiastic about this.......but I consider it a real adventure for our first caravan! About 15 days boondocking out of 45 days total! Six days in Cabo San Lucas with hookups!
Anyone care to chime in about their experiences?

We were two Airstreams passing in the night....well, really the afternoon. The family and I were on our way home from camping at Lake Berlin Ohio yesterday going east on 46 and we saw another Airstream (probably a 70's trailer) going West on 46. There was a big "Coon" festivlal going on somewhere around there. I wonder if that is where they were coming from.....anyway a Big Howdy out to you!
Heather
P.S. There are several Airstreams out at the more permanent camp grounds around Berlin Lake. Mostly 70's models.
