55 Overlander Wrong serial number - 4540 ?
Yesterday I spotted a 13 panel in town and had to stop and investigate. The owner was there and invited me inside to see his beautifully restored trailer. He told me it was a 55 whale tail .
Here's the mystery. As I left I checked the I.D. plate and the number is 4540. I just searched the photo archive and the number doesn't work for a California whale tail in 55.
Any Ideas?

Maybe his was missing the original tag, and he was able to salvage one off a parts trailer from a similar era?
Kind of a long shot I suppose... but I know that's what I'd try and do if I was missing nameplates and plaques.

Saw a relatively new-looking AS in a relatively up-scale RV park just north of The Villages, FL this morning, as we were cruising up Hwy 441 on our way home.
Can't tell what it is, maybe a 25-footer? I'm gonna guess 27' at the most.
Also saw a couple of 34-footers heading down (south on) I75 at about the 92 mile marker, but I have no photos, so not worth talking about...

If it makes you feel any better the front end caps are not shaped right to be an Airstream - the center top panel is too wide. I am thinking this was originally a late 1950's Avion.

I am by no means an expert on Airstream serial numbers, but I cannot find any evidence that either number 4540 (for a California trailer) nor O-4540 (for an Ohio trailer) were used in 1955, nor were ever used for that matter in the years 1947 (when Airstream reopened) thru 1959 (when the SNs became longer and more complex). If it is a real Airstream whale tail (and not one of the clone brands), it could actually be from the years 1954 thru 1957. It is not uncommon to have the wrong year on the title.
Posting a photo of the serial number plate and a few photos showing the overall trailer might help the identification process.

We met Laura (and Dan-fishing out in the surf) from IL who were camped out in their '76(?) 30' International on the beach at Padre Island Nat'l Seashore.
Life's a beach when you're 'streamin'.

As seen in the Jackson Center Service Shop parking lot yesterday:
Fifth guy down the row has one heck of a toolbox attached to his bumper. That can't be helping the frame....

Funny about the tool chest...
Last night Rick was talking about mounting a tool chest on the back of our Excella, to which I mentioned that the back weight might not be good on the frame....would that contribute to the end-separation problem that so many have? I know he's frustrated by the lack of storage in the AS, but to wag that kind of weight on the end doesn't make sense to me....

the wife and i have been checking out AZ state parks since we got our AZ in July 2009.
This thanksgiving we spent 4 really nice days at dead horse state park.
while there we met the very friendly billy and lanie from IL in ther 1987 30+ ft AS MoHo.
it was in great, original condition. real wood cabinets and framing and - who knew - real wood slat mini blinds
also at the park was a newer 27 ft ccd model AZ
real nice but we didn't meet the owners.
we saw, but no pic, of a nice shiny little 15 ft? bambi AS.
there was also a small bambi being used as a ranger house, but we were not allowed in the area.
all in all a great little vacation. [me doing what i do best]
we were resting up for Christmas which we will be spending in FL with the 3 grand sons.
this is the first time we stayed somewhere where there were other AS's.
we look forward to many more.

Saw a new'ish 28 to 30ft Classic southbound on I-35 south of San Marcos, TX, pulled by a honking huge red pickup. Seemed to be headed to the Camping World near New Braunfels, TX. Traffic & rain/fog kept me from noticing more.

Safe travels to the Airstream we just passed. It is heading west on Interstate 44 at mm 247 in Missouri. Didn't see much except the big blue belt line. We're heading east and not towing this trip. We've been in hard rain several hours. At least it is staying above freezing.

Who would have guessed?
We were camping at Cape Blanco State Park on Oregon Coast last week in the middle of the coldest weather we ever see here. Most sensible folks were at home in front of the fire. While walking our dog on our second day here I came across a near twin to our own '69 Globetrotter. The first photo is our's. What a total surprise.

3 nights - 3 'streams
We found these 3 'streams at each of the state campgrounds we stayed. On Dec 18 at Seminole Canyon Historical State Park, TX, we saw the 17' Bambi with the Toy SUV. On Dec 19 at Balmorhea SP, TX, we saw the 19' International. And on Dec 20 at Rock Hound SP, MN, we parked next to a 2009 23' Flying Cloud towed by a Tundra (our 25' FC & silver Tundra are on the right).

On Dec. 26, spotted a mid-'90s 31-footer headed east on I-26 near Newberry, SC. Same day saw what looked to be a '70s model somewhere up around Cherokee, NC that was all skirted in and installed permanently. Got behind a silver Chevy Silverado on the scenic loop in Cades Cove Dec. 27 that was sporting an Airstream sticker on the rear glass. On the way back home yesterday, drove by the normal collection in Bat Cave, NC. He's down to just two sitting there at the moment.

Santa brought one of the boys Forza Motorsport 3 for the XBOX360... along the Ulmann straight of the Sebring International Racetrack, there's an Airstream setup in the RV parking... looks to be a modern 30 or 34 classic.. with the awning out..

do new ones count?
well, once I add the reply-I guess the rules don't matter:
I was down in Eugene, OR for Christmas-Sutton's lot there is FULL. They must have just taken delivery of a bunch of new AS's. Lots of single axle units, more 23-27ft units than I've ever seen-a couple class B freightliner AS's (we call 'em sphincters !, not sprinters) AND a 34'9" no back bumper AS toy hauler-I didn't even know AS made these-wow, what a long trailer-79K$ out the door-you could haul a smart car in there-be a bear to counter balance, tho....at any rate a lot of new AS's in one place-too bad for me they were closed . May make a special trek down there to look see...i suppose i should leave the wallet at home, but with electronic funds avail, who knows? the safest thing to do is not to go .

unofficial Usery Park, AZ New Year's rally
We spent New Year's Eve in Usery Park near Mesa, AZ. Seems that there was an informal rally going on as 7 'streams were parked here for the night. We shared part of the evening with Ron and Laura who were in the 19' Bambi. John & Polly were in the International at the dumpstation with us, and Lynn and Ann were in the other International - both from Sante Fe.

Rolling US 17 today between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, roundtrip. Saw a total of 5 Airstreams! One was a polished up early 60's being used for some type of advertising, 2 were in somebody's yard...guessing mid 70's vintage the other 2 were on the road, one south bound, later model with a tan side stripe ~25' towed by a burgundy truck. One northbound a couple of hours later, it was a late 80's Excella tri axle being towed by a Silver and Blue Suburban.
