Trying to get the attention of a driver towing an airstream is a good reason, among many others, to have an Airstream bumper sticker on your car. After you pass them waving and gesturing like a maniac, they just might understand when they see it, and not think you're some nutcase.
Let's all get one!

Found this one sitting behind my own service department. It was locked but the interior looked pretty good through the window. The skin was in excellent dent-free shape, but needs much polishing as you can see the top front is all swirley.

Are those dents or a reflection of the sun?

Reflection of the sun. It's actually swirl marks where it looks like someone took a sander to the outside skin. It looks pretty smooth up close. It's not as shiny as the pics indicate though.
I just talked to my service manager and he said the guy has it here for winterization and also the brakes don't work. Jake said the wiring looks like a rat's nest.
There was a thread a while ago on a trailer that was for sale for over $30,000, and the owner had swirl-sanded the outside for some kind of an artistic effect (or whatever) I wonder if this is the same one?

Its funny how we all get excited when we see ONE !
This past Verterans Day 05 we were on our way back from Las Vegas to Long Beach, CA.and we saw two Airstreams going east and one right behind us! My wife jumped out of her seat and yeals "there's one"!
Do the "other NON-AS owners" get as excited as we do? Is there something "special" about owning an AS?

Once I shared with my friends what I was doing (remodeling an AS), they all succumbed to the Freeway Airstream Shouting Game as well. They report to me when they saw one, too. They have no interest in owning one, but they share my enthusiasm. Or...they think I'm nuts and don't Shout.

Here are two units from my area. The AS trailer I found today while touring through the country. The AS motohome belongs to the University of Missouri. I don't know yet what Department on campus or what its used for.
How about a word from the experts. Is the trailer an Overlander? And if so what year?

I'll say it is most likely a 1962 Overlander. My reasoning is that it must be pre-1964 due to the 7-panel end caps and it must be post 1961 due to the shape of the wheel well openings, and I beleive 1962 was the last year for the exagerated drip caps over the windows. It does look like it might be a 24' TradeWind from the photo, but the angle of the photo can be decieving. A TradeWind would most likely only have a single axle, while tandems were standard on the 26' Overlander in '62.
My vote is for either a '61 or '62 Trade Wind. One of the clues on the year is the type of exhaust fan over the stove (has the fan in the side wall and not a stove hood). The nameplates over the wndow also indicate its a '61 or newer. Tandems on Trade Winds could be ordered from the factory. Battery box over the tongue indicate its not a 'park' model. The marker lights don't look original but they do look like they've been in place for some time. I say Trade Wind because the back two side windows are smaller than standard and make the trailer look longer.

OK, what do I get if I win? Is it mine?

Yeah, I think 1962 was about the last year for that battery box on the front. '61 had the wheel wells that peaked at the center, not the straight horizontal ones. I'll stand by my suggestion that it is a '62 Overlander, or possibly a '62 Tradewind.
I think I had a case of aluminitis last night...I couldn't sleep and had a stomach ache after seeing this little unit (I think a 92' Sovereign) on the side of the road. I had my eye on it about a year ago and put it out of my memory cause the owner wanted $11,000 for it. Well I drove by it yesterday morning and saw it's sad condition...Last year it was perfect and then someone slid into one of the rear quarter panels during an ice storm. A year later another panel is dented and looks like someone tried to pull it out and now a window is missing on the side. The awning is left flapping in the wind. Today I got my guts up to go speak to the owner and snap a couple photos because we all know that these posts are worthless without pics, but nobody was home.
I don't know anything about this trailer, but I just noticed it sitting in front of a closed Winn Dixie store in Waycross, GA. It's rough-looking, but if anyone wants more pictures of it or wants me to contact the owner to get some interior shots and poke around a bit (at the floor), I'll be happy to help.
The for-sale sign says $2800 and this is a local call for me.
To give you an idea of where it's at, it's on US-1 80 miles north of Jacksonville, FL and 55 miles east of I-95 in Brunswick, GA.
