Airstream oddities

Let’s say you have given up camping, but could really use a lighter, shorter utility trailer. What to do, what to do….

We all know that Avion made a truck camper version of their famous trailer, but Airstream never did… or did they? Hint – no they really didn’t.

Interestingly, this is not a cut down trailer, but a built from scratch camper made from Airstream parts. It is much narrower for one thing. Note the single hinge door.

Could we get another hint please?
Very interesting, Mark. Mind if I add that pic to my AIRSTREAM ODDITIES collection?

Sure, help yourself. The pictured items belong to a man I happen to know who has rebuilt wrecked Airstreams for decades. Not surpisingly, he has any number of items built from Airstream parts: utility trailers, flatbeds, the truck camper pictured above (he says he used it for many years), even an Airstream pontoon boat!

The truck camper looks pretty rough now, having just set for some years, but it actually is a very nice piece of work. If it doesn't quite look like a true production unit, it does at least look like a factory prototype. It isn't, of course. He built it himself for his own use.

Here is another photo.

Truck Camper

Although Airstream never built a 'slide-in' style truck camper, they did build 2 or 3 (depends on who you talk to) truck campers on the truck frame. Sort of a forerunner of what we now consider a Class C motor home.
One of these appears in a 1958-1959ish photo of caravanners preparing to begin their caravan.
One was owned by a man who's name was VerSteeg. He was an Airstream repair/maintainence man on a couple of Wally's caravans, including "Around the World."
In later years, this unit was transfered to a later model Ford chassis and had a rear 'porch' added to the rear of it. This is the one that was in the parade at an International rally during the 1970's.
Anyway, that's the story I got when I did some research on the subject a few years ago.
Mr. & Mrs. VerSteeg are deceased so I could not get first-hand verification.
Oh yes, supposedly one of these truck campers caught on fire while on caravan, in India.
