30' AS camping
Don't know if this is the best place t ask this question. For all who own a 30' trailer do find trouble with staying in state and national campgrounds? My wife really likes the lay out of the 30' but we also like to stay in state and national parks
Thanks for your input

30 AS camping
We have a 2004 classic and have traveled through much of the country. Rarely have we had issues with size being a problem. If you belong to AAA get their camping book and you can get info about park limitations there.

The national parks are jammed and traffic growth has exploded. They are full of people who swear "they've never had a problem getting in." Those are the guys who are spilling out of campsites on both ends. Don't be that guy.

I have a 30' but we have not traveled with it much, we have been tent campers for a long long time. When we picked up our rig last summer and camped with it three weekends in the fall, I didn't find any problems with state park camp grounds in OK, IL and IN.
We too like National Parks; however, I noted that few (if any) of them have electric hook ups, never mind water or sewer. So, with the AS, I look for state parks near the national park which I plan to visit as state parks generally have electric and water. We are in the process of planning an 18 (yes 18) trip to Glacier and I've noted some sites that are long enough.
There are other threads on this site regarding camp site sizes in NPs, they (sites that will hold a 30') are more difficult to find. I believe I've seen comments about the sweet spot in terms of trailer size for NPs to be 25 foot.

We owned 27Ft "Award" trailer before moving to a newer 31 ft AS.
I would have preferred to stay with the 27' length, but we had to move to the larger trailer (a Classic 30) to get the layout we wanted.
I had anticipated problems getting into state/provincial/national parks, and no doubt there are some we could not use, but from a practical standpoint we have not encountered any problems - and the extra space is very nice, so in the end, no regrets and would do it again!

I haven't had any issues. I know tight cgs are out there, but I think their commonality is overstated, nationally. I always check online when making plans. Now, when we retire and travel 1/3 to 1/2 time, I'll probably find more of these remote older cgs, but that'll be part of the fun, imo.

Discussions I've had with other people on this forum and my own experiences indicate that on the west coast, 23' will get you into most state and national park campgrounds, 25' will get you into almost as many. Some parks have an overall 40' limit, which I have to fudge a little to make with my 23' AS and my Ford F-250. I would guess your access to park campgrounds will be limited with a 30' trailer and TV.

We have a 30' Classic. California State Parks were the most prevalent problem, as almost all of their state parks say 24' limit, but, many do have a few sites which will accommodate longer. Reserve America will sometimes catch this, sometimes not. National parks are a little better, but, check Recreation.gov to be sure. The advantage of a trailer over motor home, is you detach the tow, and can park it across the site off the road, and if not, park in an overflow lot and walk back to the site. Never had to do the latter, although came close at Bothe Napa SP in California.....

We had a short site in Texas with the tongue about 5' from the road. And the bedroom is in the back. That's been the worst of it. We were looking at a state park around the Mid-Atlantic and all available sites were 25' max. We found a private park who could accommodate us.
Get the trailer you want. Don't be like most boat owners starting out small.

Never a problem, but we have avoided some campgrounds that have smaller sites.

Stuart, we're in a 40' MH and have never had a problem with fitting in a site. We were in one area up north where there were several State parks in a small area, so we were able to check a couple of them while comfortably parked. Only one of them was too small for us to use.

I think it depends on what area of the country you are in. Here in CA, a lot of our favorite parks (mostly state and county) have issues with length. We are 45' in total length w/truck and have to be pretty selective with our sites sometimes. The older parks are harder to find spots in.
That said, there are large trailers and motor homes in most of the parks while we are there. They get their spots EARLY. I'm usually on reserveamerica.com the morning sites become available and don't have too difficult of a time finding something that works for us.

Airstream is the only brand that is measured in overall length. Every other brand just measures the living quarters. Our 30' airstream's are really 27' trailers to everyone else. I want you to realize this when buying, and making reservations for your Airstream.

We have a 30’ with a slide out and while we’ve had some tight moments getting in/out, we’ve never had a problem actually finding a spot that will fit both our Armada & AS. Having said that, when (if) I call a place to ask about availability, I always ask if they can accommodate a 30’ AS.

I’m looking for a 2nd trailer for those Cali state parks with a 22/24 limit. Love the space in my 31’ and for longer trips and actually living as opposed to weekending I️t, can’t imagine going much below 26-28’ and then too big for many Cali state parks I️ think ?? Having owned the 31’ for a few years, LOVE the space and have surprised myself by how easy to maneuver, backup and park. It’s mind over matter. I think people, me included, are freaked out by the length. Look at where I️ just parked my trailer yesterday. Totally insane but where there’s a will there a way !! . Hard to tell from this pic and I can’t post video here, but this was very steep for an Airstream.!!kind of off topic here but thought I’d share the pics.
