White top durability
Just wondering what is the consensus on the AS with factory white paint on top...is it holding up?
What year did AS start this?
We will have to re-coat at some point and I am considering white for the top...
Thanx, Bill

Bill,
I was just up top this weekend re-doing the plumbing vents (Source of interior leaks on mine as well as others). This is my first A/S with a painted roof. It's a '98 and it looks perfect.

The white paint wil eventually chalk up if you don't do any kind of wax or Walbernize to it (assuming that you are outside year round and exposed to the sun and elements). I've seen evidence on my 2001 Safari and 2003 Classic.

hi bill the current factory 'white top' is not available 2 you...
unless planning to RESKIN the roof!
alcoa ships the panels pre painted and a/s just uses them like pre painted sheets of plywood.
there are other white top options as linked...
cheers

Thanx Guys, but I still don't have a feeling for which is more durable?
(Re) Clearcoat or one of the after market white paints?
Anyone had after market white for any length of time?
Jack and PG, are yours factory white?
Thanx, Bill

Bill,
I have factory clear coat...or what is left of it
I have an SOB
that was coated with an elastomeric sealant at some point in it's life. It has stood up pretty well, but does chalk and need to be cleaned every few years. It is not what AS is using from the factory. The best top coat I have seen is what
GlenCoombe did to his MoHo. That is one awesome looking project.

bill...
clearcoat? i'm confused now.
everyone IN this thread with a 98 or newer unit has alcoa applied WHITE on top, not clear coat (peegreen, jack, c'stream, me...)
clearcoat is what alcoa applies to the shiny aluminum used as skin (except the roof section) from 99? on...
a/s used to apply plasti-coat in various formula up until 98-99...
that is also what some dealers might have applied when re-plasti-coating units.
i agree with wahoo' the white top coating glen' used is a great choice in your case.
properly applied the aftermarket white should last longer than the current clear, plasti-coat that is available.
cheers
