Walking on Rooftop??

I'm in need of working on the topside of my Argosy, not sure the steel endcaps make it any stronger/weaker than its airstream cousin, can i stand on the top?? I'm not a small man (240lbs)

I am 210 or so. I walk on my trailer. I wear soft shoes and stay on the ribs. I use 1/4" ply wood if I am going to be sitting or on my knees....stay off the end caps.

NO!!!!! You will dent the roof! Don't even think about it. Get up on a 10' ladder and reach over and press your hand - cautiously - on the roof in several places and you'll see that, especially the aluminum, is very flimsy. Try to get on the roof and you will be sorry.

Many of us have been walking, kneeling and sitting on our roofs for years for maintenance and installation of accessories. Just stay on the rivet lines while walking...and a large piece of plywood spanning the ribs for sitting and kneeling. Do stay off the end caps.

What about the new units with the raised roof for vented air ducts? Safe to walk on them as long as you stay o the rivets?

I walk on mine to clean and check everything couple times a year. 12' step ladder walk only on the white and only on the ribs. I sit on the roof if I need to make adjustments or when I added vent covers.

If I were 240lbs I'd cut myself some 2' squares of plywood and leapfrog them to get where I need to go. I weigh 177 and feel like I'm at the limit on my Streamline and Spartan.

I don't get on the roof of our Foretravel and have no intention of getting on the roof of the Airstream (when we get it). I leave that for those who are young enough and agile enough to do such things. Even though I have more padding than I used to, I don't bounce like I did 50 years ago. <grin>

Seriously, an Airstream's curved, smooth body can make for a sudden return to terra firma if you aren't careful. Keep your weight on the ribs, stay in the center, and move slowly. If you are using a pad/plywood be sure that it won't slide out from under you as you are moving.

I want to buy an Airstream, but I'd rather not find out that the one we're looking at is for sale because the previous owner fell off the roof.

I successfully got on top of my argosy yesterday and took care of what i needed. I am in need of replacing my roof top heat/ac unit and took the old one off. Had some difficulty getting old one off after i disconnected it as I got near edge of roof with it. I wound up having to throw it off the side with no damage to trailer but if the unit wasnt already broken it certainly is now.

I had to lower mine down with a rope onto the top step of a 6' ladder where a helper held onto it. they're heavy. At least my 1970's AC was heavy. Maybe they are lighter now.
