Patching a hole in the roof

I'm removing the feet to the original solar panels on my airstream because I'm upgrading the panels. They leave the whole shown below, about 3/16 inch in diameter. How would you patch this? I'm thinking a self tapping screw covered with sikaflex 221? Or maybe just sikaflex 221? These were a leak waiting to happen with the rubber gasket straddling a seam and they used silicone-- I thought that was a not advised? --Frank

Some silicones are ok on aluminum. Rivet if you can find one big enough, or a small patch. Sikaflex or Vulkem (aka Trempro) are good sealants.

Find a stainless steel screw about the right size and seal it with Trempro then stick it in the whole. A rivet sealed the same way would work as well. Make sure you use an all aluminum rivet.

I would use a 3/16th aluminum rivet with an aluminum washer for good measure. Sikiflex 221 or Vulkem 116 bottom side of rivet head and insert into washer. Add sealant to bottom side of washer and rivet in place. Smear excess sealant over rivet and washer.

Repeat to other holes.

Cheers

It is not that Silicone is not advised, It IS because silicone weathers and eventually leaks. We all learn that the hard way on boats. Use Sikaflex or Vulcem. Also easier to clean up and new sealant sticks to it if you have to remove/replace the part.
I think you can just fill the hole with Vulcem, if it is not particularly visible. Leaves a neat small diameter spot that is tightly secured to the hole. Dealer did this on a puncture on the roof of my Award and I didn't know about it till I sold the trailer some 7 years later.
