Well, it's obvious to me...

Its a "skyhook"

This is the infamous skyhook that so many apprentices have been sent in search of! Though you are the first person to actually find one that I've ever heard of.

Congratulations!

Rich

Any signs of a ladder close to it? - might it have been the hand-hold for someone who found a need to be up on the roof on a regular basis?

Or ....

... one of those pranks by a someone having a great laugh about now .....

I kinda figgered you all would have some fun with the towel rack. Now that I have started an AS storm, I may be afraid to remove it.
Do you think it would affect fuel mileage?

Talking You're All Wrong

It's so obvious...The PO must have been in the catering business. When he lost the refrigerator vent in a freak wind storm, he grabbed a trusty lid from his Chaffing Dish and riveted it in place.

I'm glad to see that you didn't also find a toothbrush holder, toilet paper holder, and magazine rack up there, too.

NO, I know what it really is!!!!!!!

That fridge cover is really hard to hold steady while installing. the PO put the handle on it to hold it in place while riveting it on to the AS...

Once on, He liked the look, and left it....

Wonder if I could fit something like that on the new vents covers I have to put on my AS...

Sure would make putting them on easier...!!!!!!!!

It's for when a AS is hoisted by a crane onto a freighter for trip to Europe.

Could be... Of course no true Southern would use such logic as long as duct tape and bailing wire exist!!! If a quality duct taping job is performed, rivets would be redundant.

My first thought, before seeing the picture, was something otherwise ordinary that was in place to serve a radio transceiver. I saw it and I thought it was in place to keep the reefer vent cleared of a "covering". I can go on and on in this unimaginative vein . . . .

Holey Crap folks----what you all are witnessing is a rare glimpse of what could have been a magnificent piece of USA Space History. Four years ago NASA was forced to cancel several Space Shuttle Missions. One of these, such discarded missions was to deliver the Habitation Module to the ISS. It was fondly named the Silver Twinky (though the name Colbert was briefly considered). It would have served as the station's living quarters for the US resident crew(s).

Wmarsha’s twinky has a striker bar mounted to the upper deck. It would have been used to secure the twinky to a latching mechanism in the shuttle payload bay just like the robotic and inspections arms.

From Wiki: The Habitation Module, aka the Silver Twinky, was intended to be the Station's main living quarters and was constructed from a 31' 1985 Airstream Excella; complete with galley, toilet, shower and sleep gaucho's. About the size of a bus, the module was canceled after modification to pressurized its hull was complete and the striker bar installed.

Now that it's been removed, please send it to the National Air and Space Museum. Bet they would luv to have it!

Photograph of a striker bar on the robotic arm - currently in use.
