HEHR Roof Vent

I have a HEHR vent that is having a problem opening and closing. The crank mechanism on one side extends all the way and closes down on the seal, the other one opens most of the way but does not crank out as far and does not close completely. Noticed the gear on the good side extends all the way and the other gear stay up in the housing. I have attached pics showing the mechanism open and closed. Any help would be appreciated.

Donít know if this will come up twice, but Iíll try it again. The Ledeaux lifters have basically three main parts. The outer cylinder, the helical shaft and the inner 1/2Ē solid stem. The solid stem has a stud that rides in the spiral grooves to make it go up and down. If a piece of gunk is lodged in the groove, it may stop the spiral action. Maybe spray the grooves and work it up and down? Iíve read that some soak the lifters to clean and free them up. Keep us posted. Bubba

Just found a post from 4/22/05 from bjond titled Anatomy/repair of LeDeux openers for the Hehr roof vent, it shows how to take them apart and work on them. My only problem is the rod want crank back up into the collar once knocking it out, it is binding.

Jim, I was looking closely at the lifters. I canít understand why your shaft wonít move. There are two studs that ride in the helical groves. One on the solid inner shaft and one on the outer shell. Theyíre shallow so they donít hit each other when operating. Maybe one has slipped into the grooves too far and is binding on the other? Iíll have to read that post you found because I canít figure out how to rebuild one without tearing it up. With as many people that replace those with Fantastic Fans, Iím surprised thereís not some for sale. Keep us posted. Thanks, Bubba

Bubba L,
My two pieces were stuck together with crud, I tapped the end off and took a socket and separated them, it looks like the shaft got some burrs on the end and will not twist through the groove, but my stuck one works great, still working on the shaft turning all the way. Trying to figure out how to clean the end up. Check out the post. Jim
