Bumper Storage Compartment

I was wondering if anyone had detailed photos of exactly how the bumper compartment is constructed. It seems to me that a piece of aluminum would be riveted to the underside of the frame and bumper and a lit would have been hinged for the top. My 62 Ambassador just has empty space between the bumper and the trailer.

If I were to rebuild this area, what thickness of aluminum would be recommended?

Any help is always appreciated.

Your idea is exactly correct. You can use fairly thin stuff for the bottom, say .032. The lid is more robust, like .062. The forward edge of the lid is one long piano hinge.

I've got one where the lid is held down by those sliding black plastic spring clips and another where the fasteners are more like zeus fasterners, but with a knurled knob. I've always thought those stems that hod roders use to hold their hoods down would be perfect.

Mine is held down by the gas struts I installed to hold it open. I mounted them so that they go over center when the lid closes.

Here's my low-tech solution to storing the dump hose. Cap fits over the ears and seals the tube.

Can anyone tell me what the negatives are in attaching a receiver platform hitch to the frame of an AS Signature Series. I'd like to use our carrier that slides into the receiver to tote our bicycles and propane fire pit. Should this be done by UHaul?

Igring, don't do it. The Airstream shell and frame are designed as a semi-moncoque structure, excess weight on the frame multiplied by distance from the axles and the vertical motion of road travel may cause the frame to separate from the shell. Airstream has a long history of it happening.

Airstream sells a rather expensive but excellent (we use it) bike rack that rests on the frame but is also attached to the shell.
