Bumper Paint

For those of you that have painted your bumper and tongue with POR-15, can you let me know if I should sand etc....before painting? The PO tried to cover the bumper with Rustoleum spray paint and it looks blotchy....do I need to sand that paint off before using the POR 15 in case there is oil etc... under the Rustoleum or will the POR 15 cover all of it?

Also, generally, how much time should I budget to apply the POR 15 base coat and Stirling Silver top coat? I have a 22' trailer.

Thanks for your advice!

I would Use stripper and remove "All Paint" down to bare metal. This way you get to the rusty area (hidden under the paint) that are there! Remove all rust and then prime and paint. This will take care of the rust and leave a nice even surface. It sould take you a day for the bumper and a day to two days for the tongue area!

Good Luck....

Thanks Vinstream! What kind of stripper would you use? Also, after stripping, am I sanding the rust off?

Well would just go to one of the big box stores and get a aircraft stripper... I like to spreed it on... let it sit 15 min... then uses a wire brush in a circle patern and work it in and let it sit 15 more min. You may need to do this 2-3 times... The metal will be left and the rust will then need to be sanded off..

I actually read the instructions: knocked off loose rust with a wire brush, made sure the surface was dry and painted away. Three years later, still looks great.

If you get to bare metal or use a degreaser you are supposed to apply the POR-15 Metal Prep first. I suspect you'll need to do this if you strip and sand to bare metal. Their web site has application directions.

My only observation was that the paint is thinner than you would imagine and goes farther than you would think. I used about a pint out of the quart I ordered.
