Question Aluminum Rear Bumper?

My 1973 31' Sovereign International needs some repair on the rear bumper. To my suprise it seems to me to be made out of aluminum about 1/4" thick. And, no it does not seem to be just siler painted steel. Somehow that does not seem like a good material to make a rear bumper. Is that normal or is this something that was added?

I have a 74 27' Overlander that has an aluminum bumper... Perhaps an oddball?

It's aluminum on my 1971, steel and part of the frame on the 63.
I prefer the removeable hardened aluminum. It's tough stuff.
