Thanks for the clarifications!

Finished product

The last two weekends have served me well!

I finally finished the spare tire carrier project. I decided to go the route of a custom carrier for two reasons (1) the cost of the stock unit and (2) I wanted something a little beefier that carried the tire closer to the underside. The stock unit leaves a little room and I've read other posts where people have "stuffed" stuff above the tire to keep it from moving around.

Anyway, here's what I did:
Frame was constructed from 1" EMT conduit (normal glavanized thinwall conduit). It can be bent with a hand bender and is very strong for the minimal weight that it adds. I used a 5/8" stainless rod for the hinge in the rear. For the latch in the front, I used 2"x 4" rectangular tubing, and subsequently "shaved" the bottom off to create a deep "U" channel. The latches are 5/16" latch pins.

The largest bulk of the work is the prep; getting the skin off, prepping the belly and reinstalled a new floor pan. The rest was pretty easy. Thankfully Airstream provides the predrilled (and captive nuts) connection on the second "C" channel for the rear hinge. All-in-all, this is a pretty robust mount. I had fun with it, and I'm very happy with the results.

Thanks again for all of your help. Here are some pics....

Thanks,
Warren

Very nice!

That's an elegant solution, WWW. I really like how low the profile is, as well. Well done, and thanks for taking the time to document your modifications.

Spare tire carrier photos

In response for pictures of my application under the tongue I find that I do have pictures. Unfortunately a virus wiped out many of my pictures but I do have back-up pictures....somewhere. I know where it is but I'm on my way out the door. I will get them posted later today.
Neil.

Front Spare Tire Mount Sources?

I would like to mount a spare against the trailer front and then have room for my tanks. Can anyone suggest a source for the correct mount? Trailer is a 56 Safari. As you can see in the pic, I may not have enough clearance for both the tanks and the tire.

I couldn't find an appropriate mount for our 63 Safari...a tire cover and bungee's worked for us...but we're more practical than aesthetic.

Spare Tire Carrier Clearance

Hi folks

I know this is an old post but I book marked it and I am ready to make and install a similar spare tire carrier.

I am concerned about the clearance to the ground. It looks like in the pic, and also with my version that there is about 9.5" to 10"

My question. Is this enough clearance? I don't want to get in a jack pot.

Many thanks in advance

Tony
