Ok, Im not sure if this is the correct place for this post, but i couldnt find where i should be posting about the "double step". I seriously need an instructional video to learn how to operate the steps. I know i need to replace/fix the front facing outrigger, but its movement isn't limited by that. The movement is limited by my apparent inability to understand "double step" mechanics. I've tried every variation of articulation and have since resigned myself to just using the double step as a single (because the lower part will not properly fold out). Anyone know any good links?

Ill post pictures of these dubious stairs later today.

Pull it from the back to the front or towards you. Bottom step should fold over the top step. I hope this helps. jim

Once you lock the "single" step in place, grasp the back (or inboard) edge of the top step and flip 360 degrees. It will unfold and drop into place.

To fold, as you lift the front edge of the bottom step, push the supports inboard to fold them as you flip the step in reverse.

That is, if all is normal.

The fold down step can be tricky but once you figure it out it is a breeze. Be sure to keep all the joints lubed up with WD40 or Boeshield or silicone so they fold properly.
The bottom step is the widow maker. It is a like a trapeeze & a bit mushy, and with some wear can be down right dangerous. It can be greatly improved with a stiffener of some sort. Check out post #25 on the flagholder thread for a picture of one such stiffener. It will make a world of difference once you get the bottom step out.

I upgraded the double step on my 2004 Safari with a triple step from a later model AS. The triple step makes the bottom step closer to the ground, helpful when camping on a slope.
I will study the posts on the "stiffener". I forgot to fold my steps up before driving off recently and the bottom step is "mushy" from being bent and straightened. Perhaps the "stiffener" can prevent the purchase of a new staircase.
