Steps drop down while driving 1962 Flying Cloud

The steps on our Flying Cloud occasionally drop down while we are driving. Other than that they are solid, work pretty well and operate normally. Any suggestions?

I know how to fix that problem! I will buy the trailer! I sooooo badly want a 62 flying cloud!

Greetings FLYNCLD,

I have had several steps on different models drop down while driving. If yours releases by pulling out the front metal in the center of the step, you might can take some pliers and bend slightly to tighten while in the closed position...it worked for me on 3 different trailers. Hope that helps.

My safari has a metal strip running across the front of the step when closed. There is a small metal bracket welded to this strip that holds the step up. if you have the same thing you need to look at the bracket and determine if it's worn out or bent. If bent you can take a hammer or something like that and bang it back just a little, so it engages the step better. Too much and you will have a hard time opening it!
If worn/ rusted out, you will need to have one made up and attached to replace it.
If you have a completely different set-up from that...

Thanks for your help...mine does pull out from the center, so I will try tightening it up with a bigger hammer!!

Rich, If your step is like mine on the '60, it's all about the little metal clip. Check this post by Mark Doane. Mark's infinite knowledge base has helped me out of a jam more than once.

The pics say it all. That's one thing I haven't taken any shots of, myself. I lucked out. My step works like a charm. When I pull out on the handle it shoots out and locks into place nine out of ten times, without any assistance.
