Where can we purchase a double entry step for our AS?

I'm not sure if the '97 Safari is the same style as my '01 but if it is, Airstream does not offer a double step version. Check out this thread and you will find a post from a fellow from Ontario Canada who had his dealer change out his single to a Classic double step. Note that it took some metal cutting and welding. I inquired at Jackson Center and was told that they couldn't (or wouldn't) do it.

Is this what you folks are talking about? I took this picture at the factory in November. Guide told us it was a $900 option. It looks just like the one on my AS, but the bottom step is missing. It would be nice to have the bottom step, because I gained a couple inches in height, since the axle replacement.

The bottom step can be added, but get the checkbook out!

If you can get one from a boneyard you will have more spare cash for the next repair/upgrade.

I did not realise we were sitting on a gold mine.

We do not have ONE but TWO of those, on our 1971 and 1974.

We rarely use them. When open all the way, it feels wobbly, there is too much flex.

So we solved the problem on the 71, which has been grounded 100% for 6 years anyway.

A bit bulky for traveling, and I guess it does not match the "Airstream Vintage look"

I assume you took this picture of a Safari. Its good to know they are listening. I think that $900 is pretty excessive. Almost like they are trying to disuade you from adding this. This must be new for 2003 because it wasn't available when I checked in August 2001 when the 2002 models were being produced.

I don't believe that that stair as shown in your picture is a bolt on replacement. Probably why it costs so much.

Geez! We must of had a lousy tour guide. That guy appears to be a fountain of mis-information. The price of $900 is what the tour guide told us. Now, I am wondering if I can believe anything the guy said period.

I can't imagine a welding shop that wouldn't jump on it for $200, you have a picture for them to see and could get the drop you wanted.
If it doesn't have to be attached, how about this. I thought another forum member had one and was happy with it.

I checked on the double aluminum step as well. I spoke extensively with A/S and the step manufacturer.

It can't be easily done on a late model Safari and, by the time you are done, with labor rates between $60 and $80/ hour at an A/S dealer, it is close to $1K, give or take a few bucks. I took a pass.

P.S. In the process, I found the manufacturer of the steel Safari steps and asked them about thier two-step steel steps that they make for other RV firms. They do not easily fit either as a replacement.

Both of the free-standing steps noted above would work great. I used a separate step of this general type on my old Scamp 5th-wheel which had no built-in step.

One thing to think about is that the further the steps protrude from the trailer, the more the leverage there is and the more trailer shake you are going to get whenever someone heavy enters. A separate step does away with that problem.

I have the double step but rarely use it. First picture shows the step I purchased from Camping World.

Second picture shows steps extended next to purchased aluminum step. It's not that far of a reach for me. Also, if I used the double step more, I would buy one of those devices sold through CW that you place under the step for more support and less rocking of the trailer.

I've got the double factory step on my Overlander and love it!,

After spending hours having to do adapt a generic step from Camping World on my Minuet it was great to get the Overlander with a step already there. It does have a bit of too much flex whenever I use the second step but up till now I hardly even flip the second step out.

Funny, how most who have it don't use it and even go through the trouble of using a separate step and those who don't have it, like the Safari owners, want it? Grass is always greener, , , huh?

Great photos on the other thread. What I was told was that the outriggers on the frame of the late model Safaris are not the same as the current or earlier Classic models, therfore, the steps like yours require significant frame member modification.

Sounded like too much metal work, so I stopped the investigation. I'd love to find out a definitive answer though!
