Sloppy step slots?

I have a potential problem with my steps. This is a 2-step unit on a 1979 trailer. When folded out into position and you put your weight on the bottom step, there is an audible "click" and the whole unit seems to move a slight bit as if it wanted to swing down under the trailer.

Putting weight on the top step, even if walking out of the trailer so no load on the bottom step, everything is nice and solid with no movement or noise.

It's my theory that the slots the step frame slides and locks in have gotten worn over time and are a little sloppy. If so, is this a problem? If it is how can it be reapired? I just don't want to enter or exit the trailer sometime and have the steps collapse under me or anyone else.

Thanks,
Christopher

Yeh, I'ld probably go with the 2 x 4 for a quick fix but, if you wanted to do a more permanent repair you should consider rebuilding the step. Maybe start with the pivot pins on the bottom step first to see if that corrects the problem.
Find the parts here: Airstream Dbl Step : ODMRV , Out-of-Doors Mart
