Repair of sloppy step and addition of second step 1969

Our step on our 1969 has been sloppy for years. It would not stay in place at the end of the groove. The slot metal was worn and bending in and eventually cracked. Finally had a mobile welder come fix it. It is not the prettiest but way better! It does not move at all when you stand on it! Wish we did this 5 years ago! He welded the crack first then welded a small piece with a wedge/notch at the terminal spot when the step is down.

I also had come across a second step that was too wide for ours. So I had it cut down and welded to fit ours. It is removable and folds flat for storage. We definitely needed it after replacing the axles!Click image for larger version

And the step on my 66 has the same wear. It clunks when ever someone steps on it. I need the same type of repair. Thank you for sharing your repair method.

All you need now is a hanger.

Mine has a longitudinal crack running along about half the angle iron at the edge of the step. Trying to get a buddy to come weld it for me. Anyone know if the whole step can be removed for easier repair?

If the step is like the one on my '74. There are shoulder bolts thru the side of the linkage arms on each end of the step. They require either a 3/16" or 1/4" Allen wrench to remove the bolt.
