Folding steps

My steps are shot. Looks like a replacement is in store. Any suggestions? Looks like a bear to get the old ones out? Anyone done this yet? The trailer is a 27' 1971 Overlander w/ rear bath.

I did it on a 71 Overlander too. It was easy but I had the floor out. It will NOT be easy if you are not willing to remove the floor around the door.

I saw the photos. Good job. I read that you welded in the new one,correct? Can they be bolted in to the floor? I would have someone else do it. I have no place to work.
Another possibility would be to buy an after market set of steel steps that could be bolted to the floor and fit the opening.

As far as I know the bolts would have to go through the sides of the frame of the step assembly. Unless you used a very thin bolt head, the bolts may restrict the steps from stowing into transport position.

It is a tight fit between the aluminum steps and the steel frame.

It is not hard to weld them in. You could always go to a metal shop and have them welded in. It takes about five - ten minutes.

As for drilling the holes into the trailer frame. the rear off the step assembly attaches to the main frame that is tubular. You would have to drill two holes for every one bolt.

Are you tracks (steel part with slots in it) rusted out?

Are the steps aluminum or steel?

You may get away with just doing some maintenance to your existing steps.

I was just looking back at the old photos and it occurred to me that I too considered bolting the steps in. I could not.

You can see in this photo that there is no metal to use for bolting to the frame.

I also have a 27' Overlander. and I think the condition of the steps and frame is about the same as your's were. The sides of the frame are rusted where the slots are. My problem is that the 'Home owners Ass. won't let me work and I have to move the trailer soon. I may try a welding shop and see if they can do it.$$$$ Tom

My Overlander did not have any steps when I bought it, ( I think ).
The photos are of a set of steps that I bought from a salvage company.

Hello,
I just replaced my front outrigger for my steps. I am sorry but while I normally take tons of pictures i was so stressed i only have before and can possibly show the after pictures later.

These pictures show how bad the outrigger was;





I too cut a small section of floor out so i could cut the old welds.
