Folding assist handle at steps

Our stationary 2002 5th wheel Prowler has a folding assist handle next to the steps.
We are contemplating installing one on our '81 Excella II, but are apprehensive about drilling into the wrong spot.
Is there anyone out there who has experience in this area and can give me a couple of pointers.
There is a CampingWorld 6 miles from home and they have one on sale, but if Airstream has one that is more suited for installation, we would like to know about it....

Any help would be appreciated.

We have one on our trailer put there by a PO. Don't know how/when it was installed but it works very well and is sturdy. Since it folds flat against the trailer in either direction, we fold it over the door for travel so no way the door can fly open. Unless I pull a bone head and forget to lock things up.

We don't use it for entry assist just yet but it makes a heck of a travel lock.

I will try to post a pic tomorrow.
