Entry step problems

I am restoring a '69 Safari with a manual entry step. My step won't stay up or retracted for travel. Can anyone tell me what to do?

when step is retracted hold up then raise l shaped lever [rt.side of step] this will keep steps up, when ready to lower push lever down. There is a spring under step that is broken. I have done it this way for years never had fall when traveling. Bill

Still no success in securing entry step

Thanks for the reply. I don't find any lever on my model. Anyone else have a '69 with a solution to this issue?

Here's the step lock next to the handle. Mine didn't stay up when I got it home. It appeared to have been pulled to hard. Had to bend it back into shape. The slot is where it locks when in the up position. Also the track where the steps slides had a chip so when engaged had spring when stepped on. Filled the chip with a weld. No more spring. I can even insert the add a step for the kids and not worry about them bouncing off. Although they might have actually enjoyed that. Hope this helps.
