Bolt for step needed....

I need a bolt and nut for the fold-out step on my 78 Ambassador. Nothing in the stores (or my extensive collection in the box with no bottom) fits. Any ideas where I can get one(or two)????

It must be catching. I just replaced a few of those bolts in my 1978 Ambassador steps on Tuesday.

Kooshka,

If the folks can't help you, there is an exploded drawing of the various parts of the folding alum steps. I would think you could call airstream and get them to send you a copy or possibly a dealer would have a copy. There are many bolt parts that look similar but, are different.

I went by the airstream store last year and even with the old parts, it took longer than I would care to admit. Repaired mine in their driveway.

Everyone should check all of the screws in your fold out steps every few months. They do get loose and are extremely expensive to purchase through a dealer. If you go to a rally where Airstream has brought in the store be sure to pick up spare parts there. I paid $60 for parts from a dealer, including shipping, that I bought from the Airstream store for $12.

Ask for an "exploded view drawing" before you order any step hardware.

That will eliminate any guesswork as to which "exact" footstep part you may need.

Anyone got a cannabalized set of steps with this bolt available? The threaded mounting hole is buggered, too, so the arm would be useful if one is available, but not essential. This is the moving end of the arm with the bolt that "catches" and holds the step in position when the step is down. (this is the good arm, not the buggered one)

Has anyone tried to replace this non-obtainium with a regular bolt and collar, or some other suitable mechanical innovation?

Good catch Billy. I was looking at their website just last night and bookmarked the step parts for future reference. When I was at the Ohio factory last December I picked up one of their parts diagrams and parts list for the double step.

Here is an alternative step bolt from McMaster-Carr Supply Company. Their item # 90298A714
Lengh=1/1/4"
Head dia.= 3/4", knurled, socket size 1/4", head thickness is 5/16"
Shoulder diameter= 1/2", length is 5/8"
Thread is 3/8 x 16 UNC
Material is 18-8 stainless steel

Note: These are not gold plated

This works just fine, is readily available and relatively cheap. For special problems the next bigger sizes can be turned down the allow use of larger thread sizes for buggered mounting holes.

Dan at ODM was a great help in assisting me in a recent upgrade to my steps. Their website has a parts list as well as an exploded view of the steps with clickable links back to the parts page.

1977 and up footstep

This may help to identify which parts are needed.

CAUTION. This drawing is for 1977 and up footsteps.
