Vinyl Stripe Removal and Replacement

I have removed the extruded aluminum molding and vinyl stripe around the beltline of my 86 Classic. The old woodgrain vinyl was badly weather worn, cracked and faded.

I tried the 3M large surface area removal wheel 07315 thinking that would rub it off. It does, but I spent 4 hours doing just the curb side. By then the wheel was worn from 8" dia new to 4" diameter.

Then I tried Kwik Kleen Aircraft Paint Stripper and wow, it was much faster and much cheaper. I applied liberally on about 5 feet, let it work for about 5 minutes, and then used an "plastic ice scraper" and just scraped it off. I had to repeat the process to get the adhesive residue off, and repeat a third time to get the stubborn spots.

I have ordered replacement vinyl in 7 1/2 inch wide gloss black, and the silver pin stripes. I have also ordered replacement rubber insert for the extruded aluminum moldings.

Where did you find the replacement vinyl?

Replacement vinyl stripes are readily available. Google it and you will have lots of choices. I went with vinylstriping.com as their price was better. I recommend the higher cost "cast" style vinyl for longer life. I also ordered the pin stripe rolls from this outfit too.
