Vintage Airstream lettering.....

Anyone know if the lettering pictured in post #4 is riveted to the body or put on with adhesive? If riveted, each letter? If riveted, you think some Vulkem or other caulk might be able to attach the letters to the body? I read something about screws or something per letter and wasn't sure if there was in fact one type that didn't require penetrating the skin.

I'm investigating some less intrusive (read non riveted) solution to replacing my cheesy plastic Airstream lettering that came on my 2004 Safari.

This letter patter appeals to me, but if there is another "retro" type look that doens't require skin penetration, then I'd love to take a peek at that as well if you have suggestions......

Not sure about later years but the 72 manual shows them with pins and retainers. It advises if access to the rear is not available - pull them off and break the pins off - then rivet back with #30 blue rivets - seal edges to prevent leaks.

I don't know for sure, but older car emblems were attached through the body panels with little "posts" that were a part of the casting which formed the emblem. In the case of my old VW, there were two of these posts on the emblem. The posts aligned with two holes on the body panel and the emblem was then held in place with little mounting cups. A trip to a local auto parts store may shed some light on what these look like.

Here is an example of one of the emblems I have. If you click on the image, you'll get a larger view.

as the attached photos demonstrate...

there are many styles of adhesive lettering available...

plaque examples are lying on the shelf below...

most of these are rivet or double stick auto tape.

my favorite is the style fly' displays in this thead...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f4/a...aque-9287.html

these are multi rivet applied,

BUT can be attached with adhesive to the window or skin...

still available from a/s store and vintage trailer supply...

and one of the best lettering styles in a/s history.

cheers
