My 84 is pretty dull in places and lookss like some of the protective varnish has worn off. What do I use to remove the varnish so I can get to polishing the can?

If you are talking about exterior finish it is a clearcoat paint and is removed with paint stripper, look up remove clearcoat or stripping clearcoat and read how to. This is a big job so know all you can before starting.
