Typeface of Art Deco ('50s) Logo

Has anyone found a typeface that replicates the "AIRSTREAM" logo badge? (Mine's a 1958) It's the "rounded letter, Art Deco vintage look" before they changed to the boxy sans serif all caps logo.

The commonly found typeface that is called "Airstream" is more of a brush script and doesn't even come close.

Bevman,

Vintage Trailer Supply has the nameplates in that type.

Yes, that is the Logo that I am referencing. What I'm looking for (if it even exists) is the computer font that matches, so I can make labels and signs that match.

It looks like a rather straight forward font to create. Here is some free trial software to give it a try. If i had the time to do it myself I would... but I'm currently at work finishing something up for Monday AM... and shouldn't even be browsing the forums LOL!

Good luck and let us know if you find/create something.

I haven't come across this font. I have looked lately and then remember bevman's post.

Anybody come across this font since then?

I posted a photo of the 50s Airstream badge on a couple of different font websites (forums frequented by typographers and graphic designers) and came up empty handed. Still looking.

I am a graphic designer of 14 years now. Can you link a graphic with the font you are referencing and I will see what I can come up with.

Michael,

PM flyfshr, I think he did the lettering for the VTS name plate. He should be able to give the information you need.

That's the one djs66 just sent me. An interesting one, but still different.

The nameplate we are trying to match is at Vintage Trailer Supply - Vintage travel trailer parts and supplies!.

And yes, I plan to buy one. I would like to use the font for projects other than duplicating their product.

The closest thing I have or have found to match that is Bayer Sans. It is missing the notches on the left side though. Here is a link to the font:
http://www.identifont.com/find?font=Bayer+Sans&q=Go

Another font that is 1950's but differes is Anna or Wingate. I am guessing AS used one of these fonts to create their own unique face for their logo.

Another feature on that site that is fun to use is http://www.identifont.com/. It walks through identifying a font face with knowing the font but having an example. Nothing I tried came as close to Bayer though.

This Phenix American is pretty good, though far too condensed of course. The original was surely a custom design, I'd think - perhaps based on other fonts of the time but with special features like the leg of the R which kicks out further than the top, and no tail on the M, and the little knuckles that stick out from the A,R, and E as if to suggest speed and motion.

Neat font.

I’m inclined to agree that Airstream probably had the lettering in that logo custom designed. It is easier to design 7 letters than an entire font set, too. Whoever did it certainly did a good job. I have been looking at Art Deco design and fonts recently and haven’t seen anything quite like it.

That said, there have been several interesting fonts located. Thanks for all the input.

Perhaps something will show up yet.

Just for fun... here's a look at other deco-flavored typefaces found at myfonts.com.

This is the VTS reproduction, followed (top to bottom) by Cinema Gothic, Haute Coture JNL, and Decomputer.
