Hopefully when I finally clean and wax the trailer the inserts in the two rubber rails will clean up. We've been too busy to clean and wax for three years and the rub rail inserts have become milky looking. The bottom one was installed at the factory in 2007 and the beltline one was installed at the service center a year or two later. For a couple of years Airtream dropped the beltline one to save money, but then people had more corrosion there and they went back to putting the beltline on.

I'd hate to replace them as it is one of those jobs where the replacement trim costs too much, preparation is tedious and putting new ones on isn't fun either.

Gene - The Protekto product is actually made by Cowles and is available through various auto body trim outlets/retailers/wholesalers for almost half the cost. The particular Chrome product number is 37-715 for a 150' reel (enough for two 34' trailers). I was able to get a 100' reel for $95 in Miami from an auto body shop a year ago for my 28'.

Here is a link for an outlet using a simple Google search to show how it is listed.

Terry's Auto Supply, Inc.

Application was fairly simple. Simply pull the old trim off, use a 1" plastic painter's spatula and some Goo-Off (or similar) for what tape remains, a wipe of mineral spirits to clean, and apply.

Trim Peeling

Jackpot! This thread seems to have the solution to my new found problem (photo below) with peeling of the lower trim over the winter. I was bothered by the discoloration last year, but this looks like a great solution. I'll stay with the brighter silver colors, nothing too exotic.

Anyone who has used this (i.e. 1" Precision Trim, #37 Sheer Silver) have any second thoughts or updates?

I just ordered mine. The old was easy to remove and left very little mess behind to clean off. I was surprised that the rivets had no sealant on the heads to keep water out. There was lots of water behind the molding. I will be sealing all of the heads before I install.

Utah Man - choose whatever finish you want. The nature of the material and UV exposure will age all at about the same rate except the red/orange spectrum which fades much quicker. The metallic reflective finishes (though plastic covered) seem to last a bit longer.

Just finished with this project. We decided to go with black to match the pinstripes and lettering. The 1" bottom used part#11100-60 , The belt is part#37130-60 from brandsport.com . prices were higher than I had seen posted here but items were in stock and free shipping. Old trim removed easily and really didn't leave much mess. Mineral spirits and scotch bright pad made short work of what was left. For a 27FB I ordered 80' of each and had 10'+ left over. Better than not enough!

Done - really happy with the look of the #37 Sheer Silver. Appreciate the pointers here; suggestions worked well. Got the AS de-winterized and prepped today, only a couple more things to do before heading out to start the camping season -- soon.

That is really sharp looking, Airstream should consider going to black trim

Talking Rub Rail Trim Molding

sheriff 1,
Thanks for the great idea of using a black auto trim molding for my 19' 2007 Bambi LE. The black molding matches my graphics perfectly. My silver AS trim was falling apart and coming loose. I found the trim strip at Vinylgraphics.net made by Trim-Gard. A company established in 1968. Vinyl Graphics sent me a sample board with the different choices of Trim Gard. With the agents help I choose part #8002S black smooth which has just the right amount of sheen and matches the profile of the AS OEM perfectly. It is a true 1" width with slightly squared edge that matches the profile of the AS trim. It is backed with 2 strips of 3M Acrylic foam tape. Unlike some other trim samples that I received it is very flexible and easy to apply when at room temperature. The trim strip samples in black that I received from brandsport.com were actually 7/8" and not a full 1" so was a little bit to narrow for the AS Aluminum channel on the rub rail. I tried several products to clean the channel. 3M adhesive remover,(worked well) Prep All oil and grease remover (worked fantastic with 0000 steel wool) in a spray can, and finally denatured alcohol as recommend by Trim Gard as a final prep before applying the Trim Gard. The Prep All is amazing and safe for painted surfaces and the aluminum coating. However, I was as careful as possible to clean up any over spray with denatured alcohol. The Prep All spray can can be purchased at most paint stores.
Thanks again,
Ken Morrow
