Stripping painted airstream.

A friend of mine is thinking about buying this 1961 airstream. Does anyone know how much work it would be to strip the paint? Do you think it would be worth it? Any input would be awesome!

Here's the problem, it was likely painted because they used bondo to fill in dents. Paint and voila damage is gone. Take the paint away and you are going to have to do a shell off to repair damage.

The paint itself doesn't appear to be adhering well, so that's good. Should be easy to remove .

BUT, if they sanded the Airstream to make the paint stick ( as they should of ) well, then they will have to repaint.

It's not an Argosy right?

I'd steer clear unless they can verify no bondo and no sanding.

It's not an argosy. I think they painted it white because they wanted to keep the heat down In the trailer as it is located in a desert location. Assuming no dents, sanding and bomdo. Do you think stripping would be a huge task? How about a $1000 for the trailer? Do you think it would be worth it.

Stripping painted airstream.

I would buy it for a grand, even if it meant that I had to end up painting it.

The way the paint is peeling of I am betting it wasn't sanded. Or at least it wasn't sanded well.

Probably painted with house paint, if so it will strip easy.

As a matter of fact, after looking at the pics again, I would be all over that for a K.

It is worth a thousand in scrap value.

I could make quick work of that trailer with an air chisel....

Not so much unless things have seriously changed in a month! To get any scrap value it must be stripped and separated and then an overlander maybe 350. Aluminum 150. Steal (if they don't know the axles are rubber filled) and the copper another 75. After you remove the brass! Insulation will kill your wire value! Yes I ask foss and they had a valuation sheet for cars and trailers!

Yes I said that! Or did I?

Scrap is always a last option but it is recycling and the usable parts and pieces are sold to those who need! When an airstream gets to a certain damage from an accident or misuse run away corrosion or a tree falls on it then it is time for the scrap yard!

Its true what other people are saying about covering dents with bondo/paint. We recently stripped a 21 footer and found the dents they were hiding. After 7 gallons of Aircraft Stripper we were able to bring back our Airstream to its original bare aluminum. Oh did i mention there were 4 layers of paint?

I'll basically echo the other folks here.

Get some good airplane paint stripper, squirt it on, go drink a few, hose it off, repeat as needed.

Just might want to do it out in the desert where the EPA won't see you

Seriously though, looks like Mother Nature has got a head start on it for you. If there aren't a bunch of big dents, I'd sure go $1000 for it.

Best of luck!

Four layers! Jezz! That's a ton of paint! I don't think with the lack of quality on the paint job they would have taking the time to bondo. But you never know.

It's a screaming buy at $1K for a project trailer.

Yes, that method works well.

Buy Kleen Strip Aircraft Remover, NOT the " "low odor" version.
