Restoring a late '50s International Globe Emblem

I was lucky enough to get a hold of one of these last summer and need to start thinking about restoring it. My globe emblem has scratches across it as you can see in the pic. Any thoughts on how to remove the scratches without damaging the etching? I would love to see anyone's efforts at restoring one of these emblems. It appears that the only color on the entire emblem is the blue lettering, correct?

Thanks, Aage. I guess that's part of the question. Is Ford Blue the closest color to match the original or is Sail Blue better? Looks like this might be easier to restore than I thought. It might be a good idea to buy one of those sticks that Shari used on her serial number and Safari name plates to scrape away paint.

Well, lots of colours have been suggested over the years.

Here's a few:

My avatar shows the original paint colors for the emblem. The letters are red over the blue as they must have painted it all blue then red in the letters, then rubbed the surface off to show aluminum.

There's a photo in my profile that shows some of the flaking paint. I'll look for others when I get home today.

Thanks Doug and Norm.

Doug your emblem looks great. You talk like your emblem paint is all original. Is that true or did you restore it?

Mike, I have one that has enough paint to show those colors, but that picture is from the Internet. I will get to restoring mine someday. Just need to find a round-toit.

The restoration process has begun... Next the lettering will be painted red and then I'll start the process of removing the paint from the etched areas with a sanding stick. Due to the lighting the color appears lighter than what it actually is in the first pic on the left.

I've made some progress the last few days. Having the sanding sticks really makes things so much easier. Thanks, Shari, for the tip!!

Still have some touch ups to do, then a coat or two of clear coat. Any recommendations? I'd hate to damage the finish. I remember somebody here on the forums who had this happen to them, but I can't find their post.
