Restored Emblems

Hello Everyone,

Well, I finally got around to doing the one thing that South Jersey RV didn't do, when they redid our Sovereign, which I was a bit PO'd about, considering the money I spent on the refurbishing...I won't even call it a restoration, because restoration implies that everything is back to like-new condition.

I was bored, and the emblems were looking bad, so I took some 400 grit sandpaper and sanded the side emblems to metal, being careful not mess up the chrome. When everything was smooth, I primered the whole emblem and let it dry. Then I painted the whole emblem white and let it dry. Then I masked everything off, except the red part and painted that red and let it dry. Then I masked everything off, except the blue part and painted that blue and let it dry. Then I took off all the masking and scraped off the lettering with my fingernail, to expose the chroming. Judge the results for yourself.

I also did the emblem by the door. It needs a tiny bit of touch up, and I need to figure out how to get the blue inside the lettering. Any suggestions are appreciated.....the automotive touch up brush is too big.

While I was at it, I took automotive touch up paint and did the rear "International" lettering. The only reason I knew that the outside border was even blue was because I found a small spec of blue in the capital "I".

I know the blue is not "Airstream Blue", but the blue I found looks nice.

Thanks. The roadside turned out better than the curbside, because the first can of white spattered when it came out, and I to start all over. I took my time on the roadside.

I did the sam thing on my AS trailer. I use a sal brush to redo the letters. Anything that was in one unit I took of and spayed in on the ground. To keep the silver form being painted I used vasline on sections that i wanted to stay silver.

So if I mask off the area, smear vaseline on the silver parts and spray the letters blue, the silver area will be unaffected? I never thought of that. Very clever indeed! Thanks for the tip, Russell; I'll try it and post results.

Will the Vaseline trick work on POR 15? I'd rather smear my arms and face with Vaseline then try a face mask, long sleeves and rubber gloves in Virginia's summer.

I have used a product before - I will have to research the name - I think it was called Liquid Gloves. You just apply it like hand cream before starting a nasty job like painting and then when you wash up the paint comes off real easy. Had it in a garage I worked in years ago, worked real well with grease and gasket adhesives.

Looks great. So you were able to remove the paint from the raised letters by simply scraping them off with your fingernail? Hmmmm.

Yes, and may I say that the fleshy part between the nail and the thumb was quite sore the next day!

Why not paint the entire area, including the letters, the color you want the letters to be, then sand off the flat (outside) part, then pain the outside part the color you want.

Because the letters are chromed.

Oh, wait, I see, you mean the emblem that says Airstream and Sovereign....the problem is that once the letters are painted blue, how do I paint the outside? I'm not masking the letters!

I believe he is talking about the Sovereign emblem. That way the grove cut leters will be filled and the flat will be what ever color you want which I believe was silver on the original emblem.

Ours looks like the chrome is peeling off on some of the edges......how have any of you corrected that.....or am i the only one?

What type of paint did you use?

I am trying to find out about replacing the plastic emblem in my '78 XLA. The photo is below. Does anyone know where to get one of these or how to bring it back to live it has the "A" in it.
