repainting rusty hitch?

Hi,
I got started wire-wheeling a bunch of rust and bubbling paint off of part of the hitch. It came off pretty easily. It was fun! I got a whole side done in 1/2 hour.

My question is: what do I do next? I want to repaint it silver like it was before, and I'm getting a little trailer money from Mom for a favor I did her; I'm thinking I should go ahead with the POR 15 since the hitch is really exposed. I know I have to paint soon or it will start to rust again. I can use leftover paint on the frame when we get to that. I'm assuming whatever I learn here I will use on the frame too if we do any rust removal there, which is a guarantee probably.

I read over the POR-15 website FAQs and I'm a little confused...do I use a treatment first and then brush on some POR-15? Or do I use the Stirling SIlver...help.

It's kind of shiny and smooth now, but there are very minor pits where the rust ate into it I guess. But it's still in good shape. I just don't know what to put on it.

To be honest with you I don't even know what kind of metal the hitch is

...it's too dark for pictures right now or I'd post some..but here's a picture of the condition before I wire wheeled it, and I'm going to call the POR15 people Monday and ask them too. Has anyone done this? I'm sure you have, I haven't been able to find a post on this but I saw one somewhere.

Boy I sure have a way of asking long questions.

The steps are:
1. Remove heavy rust and dirt (already done).
2. Use "Marine Clean" to get off all the grease and remaining dirt.
3. Use "Metal Prep" to apply a phosphate coating (optional if metal is already rusty)
4. Apply POR-15. Use either POR-15 black or POR-15 silver, I prefer silver.
5. Apply 'Sterling Silver" topcoat.

Works best if you remove all the old paint first. If you remove it to 'bright' metal, I use the Metal Prep to etch the surface.

Ingrid,

I bought a full gallon of the POR 15 to completely paint my frame, and used less than 1/2 of it.
Right after I bought it, I refilled it into 4 quart cans. I also bought too much metal prep, still have a full spray bottle of it.
The marine clean might not be necessary if the hitch is not greasy.
Anyways, if you need a quart, I can send it and the metal prep at a discount. All you would need then is the stirling silver for topcoating the area, as POR15 is not UV stable. It discolors when exposed to sunlight.
Actually, I will have enough Stirling silver left over for you to do the hitch, unless I spill it by accident.....
Let me know if you're interested.
