Remove Airstream Letters?

Hey, there,

Back again...as you can see, lots of questions!

We're planning to polish the outside of the AS and we want to remove the emblems before doing so, but the letters don't seem to have rivets...how do we get them off? 1974 Sovereign.

Thanks so much!

if they are like the 60's emblems and letters they are attached from the inside with a spring steel type body clip and sealed like crazy from the factory with some pretty amazing crud. When I did international emblems and had the inside skin off I managed to chip that stuff off, get the clips off and work around the emblem, but on our 69 the interior skin wasn't off so I ended up hand polishing with small bits, qtips, and anything I could use to get into all those spots. Maybe there is an easier way, but I'm not sure what it would be.

Goransons is right.

By the way, if you take the letters off you can rearrange them to spell I ARE SMART

That's hilarious. I may have to do that on one of my future projects.

Letter removal

The letters can easily be removed with a putty knife.

You can carefully shear the letter studs that go thru the sheetmetal.

If you do it right, you will not leave any marks or gouges.

Practice in the "I" first.

They are reattached with "blue" pop rivets that are sealed from the backside. or you can use Olympic rivets if you so chose. Use some caution when realigning the letters.

Simply paint the rivets the same color you painted the letters.

You can disregard everything that is on the backside of the segments, as it won't move at all.

Andy

more info

I have the same AS as the author of this post ('76 Sovereign). I do not recall seeing any rivets thru the blue AS letters on the front and rear of our trailer.
Is there another way that these were attached?
We have been diligently repainting all of our logos - and I have saved these for last b/c I can't figure out how I want to repaint them.

EAT RAM SIR (or ATE RAM SIR)
EAT ARM SIR (or ATE ARM SIR)

Reminds me of my way of poking fun at my neighbour - every year, she puts out this cute Christmas decoration by her front door. It's a series of wooden blocks, each with either a Santa or some reindeer flying on it. Spells SANTA. I always re-arrange the blocks when she's not looking to spell SATAN. The first year it went undetected for a good couple of weeks, lots of guests and visitors... Now, she's onto me, and while I try to fly under the radar, I think she checks her Santa blocks when I leave.

pity.

I think this is a supernatural phenom that should be up there with the Bible Code, DaVinci Code, National Treasure and Nostradamus. Maybe professizing an eastern potentate that physically resembles a rodent that has alienated a football team and has a ear hair problem

I did the same as goransons I did not see any rivets from the outside and didn't want to remove interior panel.

Andy knows more than just about anyone when it comes to AS so I guess I just didn't look hard enough.

It is a little time consuming working around the letters but then again everything about polishing is time consuming.

Letter removal/ installation

I have a question. What if you predrilled the re-attachment rivet holes in the letters through the outer skin BEFORE removing the letters to help with original realignment before popping the letters off? Would that help?

As I remember, the studs that mount the letters are part of the casting so you can not see them from the exterior

Hey Lumatic. Cool handle. What I was referring to was how Andy@Inland mentined reattaching with small rivets from the outside(to avoid removing inner skins) and painting the heads blue to hide them. At least that's what I understood. If the reattachment rivet holes are predrilled before breaking the original studs, you wouldn't need the old holes anyway but the letters would be in the original spots via the predrilled holes. Maybe? I dunno. Thanks for the reply either way.

That's the way I would do it. Perfect alignment, re-attachment a "ten minute job".

Does that include "beer" time?

Andy
