Removal of "Thor" decal

Our 2006 19' Bambi had a decal near the door ("Thor American's best RV value") that was very weathered and unattractive. I followed some advice on this form to remove the decal by soaking it with an adhesive remover (DeSolvIt). I taped a piece of cloth soaked with the remover onto the decal area and let it set for about 15 minutes. I then used a plastic putty knife to remove the detail. To my surprise, the underside surface was corroded. See the attached pics.

I searched for a readymade decal or plate to cover the corroded area, but nothing seemed suitable. So I had a local engraving shop make an aluminum plate with "Safari" (our model) that covered the corrosion ($20). The plate is just OK quality-wise so I glued in on with 3M double stick tape and will try to find something better later this summer. The pop rivets are just filling the holes in the plate. I applied a coat of Airstream clearcoat to the corrosion before attaching the plate. Works for now.

Mine is exactly the same (2005 trailer) seems the glue must affect the clear coat and allow the dreaded "filiform" corrosion to make its inroads.

Not the best advertisement for "Thor"

I like your idea and may try something similar!

There was a thread many years ago, advising to remove that as well as other stickers, for this reason. You should leave the "legal" stickers, but remove others. Did you seal the corrosion before placing the Safari plate? Great idea BTW.

I would have put our names and phone number on that engraved plate... I did just that only with a smaller plate... I figure it might be handy if I am away from the trailer and someone needs to contact me.

I did put some Airstream clearcoat (pen) on the corroded area before applying the plate.

I thought about putting our name (e.g., George and Pat), but my wife would not go for that. And a phone number.... no way. But I can see that would be a good idea!

That video is well done and funny! Thanks.

Not a good idea to put personal identification, IMHO!

I can see it again: I'm boondocking, (or not) and get a knock of the door at 3AM: "Mister Whoever, I have an important message for you regarding your family." I groggily open the door only to meet three guys, one with a shotgun pointed at me, as they push inside.

Decals can be removed quickly and easily without harming clearcoat or paint with GOOFOFF.

Be smarter about opening the door at 3 am....If those 3 guys, really wanted in they could pop the door with a crowbar before you ever woke up.

Like most decals and stickers, if you get them off fairly soon, they leave no lasting damage. I've done that with every auto I own and they have all come off fairly easily since the adhesive on the decals really haven't set up yet. Not on my Classic, the Thor decal is there (not sure why I didn't pull it), but since we store inside the decal looks pretty much like it did when I picked my trailer up from the dealer. It had only been on the lot a couple of weeks when I bought it.

I have been treating the areas around decals, running lights, etc., with Corrosion X. I don't want that film form corrosion even starting.

Thor Sticker

Hi. I have plenty of projects, but every time I opened my Airstream door I had to look at the grungy Thor sticker next to the door. I finally took my plastic razer blade and holder (get these, they are wonderfull) and scraped it off. It actually came off pretty easy. I took some mineral spirits and paper towels to clean it up. It took me a while to understand that the sticker glue actually etched the aluminum clear coat. You can feel the recessed edge with your fingernail. Has anyone successfully buffed these out and re-clearcoated the spot?
Sorry, I didnt get a before pic.

I covered mine with a proper sized American flag. There was no way the etching was going to buff out. I think my Thor sticker was smaller than yours, though.

Thor tool was manf. in Aurora Il. made very good tools commercial grade, sadly they went out of bus. many yrs. ago. I believe they closed early 60's? There isn't any connection between Thor AS and Thor tool manf. Co they always had superb q. control of there products and all cast metal no plastics ever. One prob. was employees stole tools and sold on street and every places they could. I knew many that worked there.
