i sprayed my 18 footer frame with epoxy... but that might have been a little overkill. i wouldn't rattle-can it, though. i hear good things about POR, too.

I'm using a rustoleum product. I think it's called Rust Restore or something like that. I just did the front 2/3. Ground it down good with a wire brush on an angle grinder and came in looking like a racoon. Hope it works, but I had pretty minimal surface rust.

The shop that is building me a new frame suggested a spray zinc coating that would last for at least 30 years. I dont know much about it, but it must work well. Total cost was 2 gallons for $34.00. Anyone heard of such stuff?

I think to get the results you're looking for it has to be HOT dipped.

Those guys are talking about spray a paint----go with the POR-15, it's proven cheap and used in the automotive restoration biz on million $ cars.

Is POR 15 available everywhere, or is it online ordering?

Since my frame will be new steel, will the shop have to etch the metal before coating?

Yes. I had several areas where the POR-15 peeled off new steel, even after using the Marine Clean and the Metal Ready.

If I was starting with a new frame, I would use something else. POR-15 is GREAT on rusty metal. Not so great on unrusty cold rolled steel.

Strange that that happened.

METAL-READYTM provides the best adhesion for POR-15® on any surface, including aluminum and shiny polished metal surfaces. Our simple process gently etches metal, creating an ideal anchor pattern for coatings such as POR-15®, while simultaneously leaving a zinc phosphate coating to insure chemical bonding of paint and steel. Avoid other preps that may leave harmful residues which prevent proper adhesion. After thoroughly degreasing your work piece, apply environmentally safe METAL-READYTM to both neutralize any rust and etch any clean bare metal. This will allow better adhesion of POR-15® or any other paint. METAL-READYTM is not caustic, corrosive, toxic or flammable.

Cold-galvanizing spray paint chips very easily - although the lawn mower chips and dings around the bases of my 2" clothesline poles I primed with it are just now beginning to rust after six years of exposure. If you do go w/ spray zinc anywhere it should be two thin coats and then has to be well sealed with two or more coats of a hard chip resistant top coat. After using POR-15 and seeing the great results - rock hard, self-leveling and good coverage, I'll use it on mobile projects and keep the zinc-rich primers for things without wheels.

Thanks. Next time I will have someone read that part for me.

I know all of these are good for painting over rust, but I won't have that issue. POR may take alot of prep time for the shop which will add time, especially if it requirs a degreasing stage, then an etching stage, and finally multiple coats of POR. I may just want to find something that can go directly on, but this may sacrifice quality in the final product.

You might have the shop try to get this:
http://www.tnemec.com/product/overview/?p=45
Requires only commercial blast cleaning of the surface.

Otherwise, any bodyshop should be able to fix you up with a good quality primer for new welded steel.

Bedliner material

Guys,
Just my two cents but I am going with a gloss black product called Durabak (you can find it on ebay or at the company website). It's a high grade bedliner product and the only prep is a thorough sanding followed by a Xylene wipe down. It rolls or sprays on. I saw it on an AS in a park in Colorado this year and it looked great! I intend to use it to mask the very front of my Sovereign too for rock protection.
