Painting Extruded Aluminum “Excella” Emblems

Our 89 Excella has four raised, extruded aluminum emblems (one on each front corner, one on rear-end and one on the propane tank cover.
They are unpainted on the top, but the edges and hollow spots inside letters are painted AS blue.
How do I paint the painted portions without getting paint on the top surface?

Paint the whole thing then use a deck sander on the flat surface to restore the aluminum.
Spray the whole thing with a clear to keep a shiny look.

Mask off surrounding area. Spray with a rattle can. Remove paint from surface with solvent and towel.

Definitely spray clear coat on the finished project.
We had to come home in a snow storm and salt on the roads. Emergency required the trailer be put away til spring.Newly polished aluminum castings were severely corroded by the time I got it out. Never did look as good as P&S did originally.
I have often used the Vaseline trick in our maintenance operations (way back when). Sanding off the paint will leave a rough finish but you could use polishing compound to get it back

On my 94 Excella it appeared to have decal lettering. I wire brushed the emblems to remove corrosion, painted the background with acrylic paint from a craft shop and taped the letters with Nashua foil tape #322. I then cut out the letters with an exacto knife. It's been almost 3 years and still looks brand new.
