It's not filiform, but what?
I brought home a new (never been titled) 201123fb recently. It has no corrosion, but there is some type of film on the handles, hinges, tail lights. I haven't seen this referenced on the forum (but I could have missed it). It does scape off with my fingernail. I tried a polish, but it didn't work. I'm hoping for a better solution than my fingernail?? Any ideas on what this is or how to remove?

Hey there,
I just came across your post and saw that no one answered...did you happen to figure it out? We just brought home our first Airstream and have the same thing going on. Would love to know how/if you got it cleaned up?

Just looks like road grime to me. I would take a general cleaner to it and see what happens.

Try one of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, with an appropriate detergent.

I figured a protective coating as well, and left it on the tail lights.
A light solvent may remove it but be careful, these have a thin coat of clear coat acrylic, then thin plating of aluminum, and are some kind of cast "pot" metal. As I understand it.

I would try some polishing compound. Try rubbing a little circle with a rag, then wipe off. NOT rubbing compound - polishing compound is fairly innocuous stuff, but rubbing compound is very aggressive.

We had the same issue with our new 2011 International. It appeared on the bumper, taillight housings and grab handle by the door. Our dealer indicated it was a problem with the clear coat on these components. Apparently it was affected by exposure to sunlight(!). Ultimately, they replaced all of the affected components under warranty. The dealer could not find anything that would otherwise clean it up. I was surprised to have this problem but was happy with how the dealer and JC dealt with it. We have had no other problems with our unit.
Hopefully you can get this resolved as well.

I have actually tried a polishing compound, a Mr. Clean magic eraser, and small plastic glue applicators (the look like mini putty knifes). I have not tried any solvent yet. My only luck so far in removing the film is my fingernail. It does look like the metal under the film looks good. I guess the local AS dealer and JC is my next step.....
The good news is I bought my never titled 2011 this fall. I realize there is a lot of opinion about RV's that sit on dealer lots, but at least I have pushed my warranty out until the trailer is actually 3 1/2 years old.

You need a mild adhesive remover (Bug and tar remover)available at any auto parts store there is one made with natural citrus and will not harm your clear coat and smells great.This should dissolve the temporary shipping coating that is on those parts and will not hurt your permanent protective finish finish.Try this first before moving to stronger solvents such as Goof Off.

C-in-CHOMEFLT swears by "Kaboom" - she's in charge of how we clean our rig and this looks like road dirt that would not like to see her coming its way.

It is not road dirt but a paraffin based protective coating similar to cosmoline that is used on aluminum in a lot of different applications.Automotive etc.....

I have one door hinge that is yellower than the other. Can't wait to go try to clean it off. Thanks for bringing this up.

If it's paraffin based then Boeshield T9 corrosion treatment, which is paraffin based in a solvent, would just melt it away. Then wipe it clean with a rag.
I would follow with a treatment of CorrosionX to protect them on a regular schedule, depending upon how close you live to salt water or road salt.

I'll give those two 'solvents' a try as soon as I get Airstream back from the dealer. I'll post the results of the tests......probably next week.

Have the dealer remove it while its there.It should have been done before you took delivery.

I mistrust my local dealer service department to the point where if I need a minor repair, I do it. If I need a major repair I take it to Jackson Center.
For cleaning these up they would turn it over to the same wash crew that drug a hose through the sand and then around the edge of my trailer. No thanks, I'll do it.

We had the same experience with scratches put on our propane tank cover ... we prefer to do the non-technical jobs right at home.
