International Globe Emblem - Who Has One?

A few weeks ago I was able to get one of these rare and highly coveted globe badges for my '58 Overlander. My Overlander had two when it was originally built, but both were missing when I bought it back in May. I'm curious who out there has one and how many were installed on your Airstream. I've heard of some having as many as three.

I'm also curious what years these were installed. I'm pretty sure these were first used in 1958 but what year were they last used? 1962?

Hi Mike:

Congratulations on your find! I think the round International globe emblems were used from 1958 to 1960, and only with the small serial number and (if present) model name plates. I believe they ceased being used when the large rectangular data plates were adopted during the 1960 model year because the large rectangular plates included the trim level above the name "Airstream". A blank or no name = standard (120 volt appliance) trailer; "Land Yacht" = middle trim level self-contained trailer; and "International Land Yacht" = top trim level self-contained trailer. I haven't yet measured the height of the various types of rectangular name plates to see if more words increased overall height. If you are running low on things to do . . . . Also, in early years the large rectangular International name plates oftentimes were framed with raised trim (as often were the block AIRSTREAM name plates above the front and rear windows), making it easier to identify an International model from afar or when the data plate is out of view or illegible.

I've seen trailers with 3 International globe emblems on them (usually high on front curb and front street sides, and above the rear window) and with just 2 (front curb side, sometimes a bit lower, and above the rear window). I haven't yet figured out why there was a difference in number used, whether due to the passage of time (fewer in later years), running low on emblem stock (hence 2 rather than 3 on some trailers), or different practices between the factories. Many observations over time sorted by trailer VIN numbers may begin to clarify the reason or lead to a theory. As with all things Airstream, save some room for exceptions to the general rule.

Thanks, Fred. Very interesting history of these emblems.

I'm a bit surprised nobody else has responded to this thread. I guess these emblems are more rare than I previously thought.

Thanks to both of you for the info. I've always liked these International emblems, but only seen photos.

What is the diameter of these?

Doug, did you restore that emblem? If you did, how did you do it? I've restored other Airstream emblems with no problem, but this one looks pretty difficult.

I didn't restore the one in the picture, I found the picture of it done. I have 3 on my 60 Ambassador that I need to do some day. One of them showed the colors as in the picture. It looks lke it was all blue then the letters were painted red with high spots rubbed off to show the aluminum.
