Exterior Paint Removal

Just out of curiosity, how hard is it to remove the paint on the exterior skin of an Airstream?

Did the surface need to be prepped by sanding before the application therefore degrading the aluminum surface? Is the removal similar, if not the same, for removing the clear coat? If so, what would you expect to find underneath?

There is an AS on Craigs in Phoenix that has been painted and my father and I were discussing this very issue.

How much work is in store to remove it and is there another reason (other than personal preference) one would paint the exterior?

I'm looking at a trailer with the same issue? Is it worth passing on or can this be removed easily? It's already flaking in some areas.

What's under the paint? Bondo?

It may need to be repainted.

Dear star kitty,
I removed the clear coat with Jasco Paint and Epoxy Remover I purchased at Lowe's. It will damage plastic lenses and fixtures. Remove them or mask them to prevent damage.
If the Airstream has been sanded, primed and painted, you might consider having the paint redone with a high quality paint by a professional painter like Inland RV.
