clearcoat over a polish job
I'm looking at buying a '73 Tradewind. Of course the plasti-cote is pealing off of it. I'm wondering, can you strip the coating, polish the trailer and then spray it with an automotive clear coat so you don't have to repolish the aluminum every other year or so?

Yeah, paint doesn't stick to wax too well. I figure it's easeir to wax it at the beginning of the season than to polish it. Less messy too

Automotive clear coats aren't recommended for application to raw aluminum -- application over a specialized primer/paint combination formulated for use on aluminum is workable. The usual product of choice is Plasticoat which was originally developed for Airstream and was standard on coaches beginning in 1964. There are a number of qualified shops that can apply this specialty product across the US. The Ruths at P & S Trailer Service polished and plasticoated my '64 Overlander over seven years ago, and the Plasticoat is going strong with just two coats of Walbernize each year (Spring and Fall).
A photo of my coach is below:
(Note that the Ruths will polish the coach to "original luster" or the more mirror-like level -- I wanted mine in original luster and I have been VERY satisfied with the results.)
Just for a comparison, the starting point is below:
Good luck with your investigation!

This is what I'm going to try
I am mid way through polishing my trailer and am going to try a POR 15 clearcoat called Glisten PC when I'm finished. The aluminum needs to be polished, cleaned with solvent, treated with an adhesion agent, washed, dried and then clearcoated. POR 15 has used it to treat polished aluminum with supposed good results, but there are forum members that suggest it won't work. Guess I'll find out. Here is the link to the product: GLISTEN PC-POR-15 Inc.

Please do a write up on this product when you get through. It has been my experience all the POR products work as advertised and this looks great.

Interesting~
I looked into this same product about 5 yrs ago and, what I found then is true today..As I read it.
quote..
GLISTEN PC is a High Gloss, Rock Hard, Water-clear topcoat designed for spray or brush application over all metal surfaces, including highly polished aluminum and chrome surfaces. GLISTEN PC will not leave brushmarks, and will dry in less than one hour, but will take 3-4 days to reach maximum hardness.
When GLISTEN PC is first dry to the touch, it will appear to be very soft. Avoid touching it for several days until it becomes hard and tough. Accidental contact could damage the surface before full cure has taken place. Like many other coatings, GLISTEN PC is a MOISTURE-CURED coating, which means it is strengthened by exposure to moisture. It will never crack, chip, peel, or yellow, and is very flexible as well.
Note: When applying over polished metals (aluminum, chrome, brass, copper etc) you must use AP120 metal prep according to instructions.
IDEAL USES: As a protective coating on aluminum wheels, chrome bumpers, marine railings, chrome or aluminum covers, grills, handles, ornaments, lights, etc

I will be interested in your outcome..
Good Luck

Hey Kevin (Overlander64)
That's an interesting WBCCI number shown in your "Before" photo

The WBCCI number placement was due to two factors -- the last minute rush before leaving for the International Rally in Boise, ID (1998) and my fear of heights. The backwards "3" caused a number of problems -- the most memorable was having one of the parkers scold me because "the backwards "3" made it impossible to tell what my WBCCI number was" -- and I made the same mistake front and rear. During the five years that I had that set of numbers on the coach, so many of the VAC members became accustomed to the backward "3" that I was often asked "why didn't you keep the backwards "3"?

Hey Kevin,
I think it definately adds personality. I suppose the scolder could not figure 6E59 is supposed to be 6359?. I probably would have laughed it off, considering the source.
Take Care,
Kevin

If it hadn't been my first major rally of any type, it probably wouldn't have bothered me in any way, but it was my first experience with the "system". Fortunatley. Kathy Hunt, a long-time WBCCI member was my neighbor took me aside after the encounter and basically told me not to let it bother me as everyone in the Vintage area looked out for one another and the number problem wasn't a problem.

Was this parker a blonde?
Possibly related to the one who tried to dial nine eleven in an emergency but couldn' t find the eleven on the phone.

I am sure that he had been having quite a trying day -- the VAC caravan was arriving as another in a series of rain storms was threatening. Several of the VAC coaches and tow vehicles had difficulty navigating the soft earth in the field where we were parked. I was the last or next to the last coach in as my tow vehicle was new and had four wheel drive.
