Clear coat flaking not a problem with 2003 or later models?

I was at a dealer yesterday and the sales associate mentioned that after the year 2002, the flaking that occurs with the clear coat is no longer a problem as changes were made to the finish of the aluminum. Is this true? Has anybody else heard about this? Thanks.

Brian

Its true that they changed the coating. NOT true that there's no longer a problem. It just peels...differently.

Brian,
Filiform corrosion is still a problem. Take a look at these two links...

History Safari Express Blog Archive Filiform corrosion

Our '06 has a few small patches of it on the bpdy and on the aluminum wheels.

Unhappy Thanks for your insight!

Thanks for the responses.

There is growing concern on our end that a $30K+ investment in an airstream could turn out to be problematic due to corrosion and peeling of clear coat. I know these are highly rated trailers but my impression is that there will be high maintenance/cost even after you purchase. Our excitement about getting into one of these is waning quickly. Are we making too much of a problem that may be rare or easily prevented?

I would say that any toy such as an R.V., boat, or travel trailer comes with a fair share of upkeep. I would think that an investment in an AS would be worth it over other units. that is just my opinion. Good luck with your decision.

Bgowen,
You are doing your research up front, which is good. So armed with what you know you can make an informed decission. So when you go to look at units (new or used) be sure to look for known issues and make the sale of the trailer contingent on fixing what you find.

The filiform corrosion is more of a cosmetic issue and does not affect the functionality of the coach.

Please don't be disuaded from considering an Airstream coach. Just go into it with open eyes.
