I am obviously quite bad at the search function, but I looked all over the place and figured out that my 67 Safari prolly needs POR-15 in a bad way to arrest the rust on her frame/tongue/bumper.
What I haven't been able to discern is what is the best color to paint over the POR-15? Looks like newer ASs have black tongues, but Andy mentioned some charcoal gray and polished aluminum.
I'd love to see a photo or two of a vintage AS with new paint on the tongue/frame to help me decide what color to go with. I don't necessarily care about the color being original. I just want it to look good.

The grey POR15 with Sterling Silver looks awesome. I have it on my tongue (bleeagh) and I put it on the wheels, I'll take some pictures and post them on my Flickr account later today. I have pictures of just the POR15 on the tongue, but none with the Stirling Silver on top. I"ll be back on later.

Whatever topcoat I buy, I think I'm gonna need it all. I've got a lovely rusty hue all the way from the tongue and crank back along the frame to the bumper. Another issue is that I'm under 3 feet of snow here, so I can't tow it home from its storage slot to do the work. I either get to undertake it on vacation April 1-12 (maybe in a Wal-Mart parking lot ... evil snicker) or wait until snowmelt here (May?)

If you like the color of the bottoms of the newer Airstreams, Sears Toolbox Grey is very very close to the color. It is available in spray and pint cans.

Did you use one pint to paint the whole frame, or just the tongue and bumper?

Only the bumber and front exposed frame members. I did repaint the frame inside the belly pan, but black.
The por-15 (sterling silver) has a nice (dull) satin finish. I did the metallic silver spray can thing for few years before getting around to doing it the right way.
Of course, the paint job is only as good as the prep of the surface material and that is most important to spend time on. The por-15 brushes on very well and smoothes out to a flat finish. Helps me to read to directions a few times.
I still have half a pint left after the work was done...so it does not take much paint.
