A primer if you visit Prescott. Prescott is pronounced Press-kit, it rhymes with biscuit.
Foreigners are recognized immediately when the utter the dreaded "scott" ending.
Rather than completely hijack the thread I took the liberty of responding here. PeeWee's comment gave me the idea (thanks PW). What can you come up with? So maybe if we visit we won't be pegged for furriners

The province next door to the east is called "Kay-beck" and not "Kwee-beck". On paper, it looks like "Québec". Same goes for the city of the same name.

Old-timer locals still say "AlbuRquerque" rather than "Albuquerque" (according to Rudolfo Anaya). And in doing so, they're closer to an original pronunication.

The "latest discussions" page (or Portal) doesn't include posts from the "Off Topic" Forum. If you use the "Quick Links > Today's Posts" or "New Posts" instead, it will appear.

I live in NORFOLK, NY which the locals pronounce NOR'-FORK. The nearby town of MADRID becomes MAD'-RID.
A Radio Announcer friend of mine was new to the area, and pronounced Norfolk properly as NOR'-FOLK. A guy called in and called him a jerk for not being able to READ right!
Now you know what some folks around here are like.
If I can remember to do it some time, I need to copy down all of the dozens of misspellings of "Taos" by the touristas. There's a sign down in the old hardware store near the plaza with the listing. Taco. Tahoe. Tao. And on and on and on.

Missouree or Missoura? And while we are there, Innapenence for Independence and Kans City for Kansas City......paula
Down here we say Missouree. But Nevada, Mo. is Nevaaada (with a long "a") and Miami, Oklahoma is Miamah. And Little Rock, Ark is Lil Rock. Duenweg, Mo is pronounced Dunaweg. And when we lived in Colorado, Pueblo was pronounced Pee-eblo.

Many outlanders from our east keep on taking about Rudosa (instead of Ruidoso).
One time several years ago, we had some guests here with a teenage daughter who hated everything in sight. So one day the parents and brother went up on the slopes, leaving the daughter here. She marched up to me and demanded to know how far it was to Tahoe (as if she could drive). I looked at her, pointed to the west-northwest, and said that I thought it was about a thousand miles that-a-way. I'm afraid that I didn't help out her mood any. (Little snot.)
