Förstår reveals itself when heard phonetically; it sounds quite similar to the German
verstehen (understand).
The aside is -- in 1970 Susie (
mon marie) and some college mates spent the summer traipsing through Europe. Susie taught her girlfriends enough Swedish to fend off the young Italian men -- the latter being sure they were addressing Americans (do you think Susie's red, white & blue miniskirt gave it away?). The young men became confused and actually gave up when they couldn't figure out what language was being tossed at them.
