I used to answer this sort of thing based on the weather. But I think there are better ways.
Where can I make a difference in the community? Where can I find a town with an engaged citizenry, a low crime rate, access to public transit, and some support of the arts? Who we are is so much more than what we do for recreation - at least it can be.
When my parents took us to the peace corps back in 72, all the volunteers in language school were asked where they wanted to go. They were then told that the where wouldn't matter nearly as much as the job and what they brought to it. If they could be satisfied with the work, an otherwise dismal place would be great - and paradise itself would seem like perdition otherwise.
I think this is true, and I think one gets a lot more out of a community by being engaged in it, hence my first sentences.
