Hijacking

I hate rules, OK, but every once in a while, one occurs to me.

In order to reduce thread hijacking, I suggest that all posts must include at least some content relating to the original thread topic. Posts containing only wisecracks, flames, flame responses, tangents, etc. not allowed--go start your own durn thread! I mean, let's face it, there's way too much fun and oblique thinking going on around here! Some members want questions answered, projects documented, and boondocking locations publicized!

Humor and social threads excepted, of course.

This should apply to members with [choose one] (1) fewer than 3 rivets, (2) more than 2 rivets, (3) everybody, (4) not Rivet Masters, (5) those who haven't gotten their AIR stickers, ....

I see you are asserting your Rivet Master status already. Keep one thing in mind though-Rivet Master is as high as you can go at least on this earth.

The rule you are asking for is already part of the Community policies:

"The basic rules for discussions on the AirstreamForums.com are simple: be polite, use common sense, don't break any laws and don't post any message that hint at advertising in a forum other then the vendor forum. We don't intend to censor messages based on the opinions expressed within those posts, but we will enforce the policies outlined herein. We reserve the right to remove, modify or move posts at our discretion and without explanation. If you have any questions, please ask us."

Threads that veer off the subject are split and made into a new thread or merged with a like thread by the moderators. Then there are those comments and posts which are flaming and not very nice, these too are covered in the policies:

"We take the "be polite" rule VERY seriously! We do not tolerate ANY rudeness.
This forum utilizes a member warning system. Any member who is intentionally unpleasant or disruptive will receive a warning (at our discretion), and if the member offends again the member may be banned or placed in a probationary status without notice. Finally, any abuse toward our staff and/or management will result in immediate suspension of your account"

So as you can see we are all set to tackle the serious stuff and I do agree sometimes the threads do get out of hand. When that happens notify a moderator. Let's get back to some serious axle grinding wheel pulling, tire throwing, sitting under the old ZipDee, Airstream camping.

Thats what makes the forum interesting and fun to read.

Next thing, you'll be suggesting that we wear silly hats and uniforms to go along with these fake "ranks".
c'mon. We don't need "Robert's Rules" to have a forum. Lets not turn this into a wally-club business meeting.

as a humor check, this worked (or didn't). I was sure the first post would be

"How 'bout dem Yankees..."

speaking of the WBCCI, am I mistaken or didn't we "save" it recently, including it's rules?

yea for early morning caffeine!

rules

I don't hate rules, they're good for measuring stuff. As far as hijacking, aren't there already laws against that?? I thought that's why we stood in line at security checkpoints so long at the airport... But while I'm here, let me ask this: does anyone know what causes rear-end sag, and why it showed up in my 50's? Can I get rid of it with bolts, or just tighter underwear? thanks- tim
In order to reduce thread...
speaking of thread.....

2 b included in the 'tank dump' process at the international,
the requirement was to 'tie a piece of yarn' around the flush handle...
that's right yarn.
red yarn as i recall.....

i mentioned this to a long timer parked close by and he said...
"oh we already knew about that, so the wife picked up a package of yarn yesterday" ...... "would ya like a piece?"

as a result of this 'gift',
my yarn was properly positioned and secured....
and i got dumped regularly too

later i saw several of the presidents/first lady's and other ribbon wearers....

after greatings (with each of them eyeing my 'mal' badge) i commented...

"so i just learned about how we mark our trailers for being dumped"

everyone nodded in understanding....

i added......

"ya know this might be one of the issue,
that causes problems for us younger members.....
most of us don't carry yarn.
many folks may not even know where to get yarn."

taking a breath, i went on.......but the nodding had stopped...

"in order to attract and keep younger members,
it might be necessary to drop the yarn requirement,
and go with string, ribbon, cord, rope, tape...
or some other thing that most people carry..."

as my comments sunk in,
all the elder members frowned,
jaws firming up and
heads nodding slowly left then right...

"no we couldn't make a big change like that, it would only cause lots of confusion."

said a current president.....as their spokesperson...

now the group expression is a subtle smile
and the nodds shift to up & down...

he went on as presidents do....

"you younger members
just need to get a few internationals under your belts
and learn more of the ways......
also IF YOU were a member of a real unit....
you'd have learned this ahead of time, and come better prepared
members at large are never prepared and they always cause us the most problems"

now the smiles are full formed and the nods are in bobble-head rhythm...

as the bobbing slowed, i smiled too and asked.....

"would any of you like to try on the new beret?"

i've never seen old folks scatter so fast.......

cheers
2air'

now what was the topic zep?

While going off on a tangent in a thread about hijacking to talk about, say, cross-country ballroom dancing at length is one thing, but it's generally regarded as human nature to want to banter a little over a thread subject, much as you might if actually standing around in person with others discussing it. One of the "other" prominent RV forums imploded a while back, and now seem to have thread contributors on a very short leash. Such is not the case here, nor IMO would it be necessary to implement such an approach (not that it's what's being proposed). Our moderators, at least as long as I've been a member here, have always seemed to strike the right balance between "enough" and "too much". Things seem to flow well here, with an occasional flare up or two, which are always handled discreetly and expeditiously. My concern is that further restraining how and where people post beyond what seems to be reasonable, will only serve to make interaction more stilted, and somewhat less personal, because the type of people we are so often comes out in what/how we write.

In short, I'm in favor of letting it ride, and let the moderators "keep on keepin' on."

This editorial reply brought to you by Friends of Cross-Country Ballroom Dancing, and remember, "Friends don't let friends waltz in Chukka boots"

No more rules, thank you.
I've been here for a few years, normally don't post much, as one can see by my rivet status. This site works very well IMHO and all the moderators do a good job.

Ok

OK Zeppelinium - I'm hijacking your thread about hijacking threads. (Is that enough of a link?) Since you use a lot of those little smiley guys do you or anyone else know where I could find one doing the hula? Thanks.

maybe...
they're closer to that end than a certain other team, (the name of which I can not speak), previously mentioned in this thread in an obvious attempt to bait me into a confrontation.
I'm not bitin'....

just a thought on hula hoops.....

what drives me hoppin' mad.....

is folks who start threads without searching first!

just cuz ya got 500 doesn't mean the ruz dun't aply...

http://www.airforums.com/forum...king-6558.html

see here is a perfectly good original thread on the subject with one perfect reply....and it's still correct now.......3 years later!

so there should be a .....a......a.......rule.......yea that's it a rule!

cannot start new thread,
till all terms have been entered in search function...
and everything relevant or not is read.....twice.
then a brief quiz...
followed by a waiting period...
no more that 5 days...
new threads then allowed,
based on post count...
at a ratio of 100/1...

unless the thread is related to towing, leaks, mice, or the wbcci.....
then the ratio is......

well a lot bigger, say google2one.....

and how about crappy titles for new threads.....

'hijacking'....ha

it's not about jack and no one is high.......

why not just use "i have a question"....

lots of folks seem to think that works great...

and.....and.....and.....

no more emoticons....please take the faces away.....

no hoops for you!
