We need more curmudgeons.

This thread has been an exercise in the theater of the absurd mixed with nonsequiturs and now another direction is being disclosed.

It used to be that when a friend passed away you had to erase their name from the Christmas card address book and their name from the birthday card list. It was one less place to go as an option on your Sunday drive, and someone who will be sadly missed at the campfire when out with friends and family enjoying natures wonders.

Today, though, it seems much harder. Yes, there are all of the above things that have to be done and they are no easier, but think what we've added to the mix. You have to go around to each phone, be it house bound or cellular, and remove their home and cell numbers. You have to remove their email address(es) from your computer. Each of these activities is SO final . It seems so much harder to let them go because not only did you have the contact one uses to have when you went to visit or met up somewhere, but you also had virtually instant contact. If you were out shopping and saw something you knew they'd like or get a kick out of you could take a picture and fire it off to them knowing that in moments you'd have a response and a shared moment that won't happen ever again. You could expect that same back and in some cases that happened often and at times could almost be embarrassing, but often funny . And you shared emails about a lot of things that in the past, while sitting around that camp fire or out fishing or for a walk, or just as couples getting together you couldn't find a way to bring it up, but on line you knew they would read it when they could and responses were pretty much always more "liberal" than what you'd get in a group setting.

So go through those names on your email list, and the same on your phone addresses, and drop them a hello now, while you can. It doesn't matter how old they are or how healthy they appear, life happens, and so while it is happening in a way that you can share it, do it!

And get them out in their trailer this year camping and enjoy that time with them because all the electronic communication is great, but it just doesn't make up for face to face chatter and natter and sharing "yourselves" with each other. Or should tha be rewarding each other with your presence.

Today I've been doing the deletion. It has taken me two months to do it. It is so final. But I do have something I'd not of had twenty years ago that makes it much easier. I've got emails, jokes, words of wisdom and tales of woe, pictures of the things he thought were funny or sad or that I'd find of interest in some way and I know in the moment of taking and sending them he was thinking just of me and our friendship.

Now I've got to set up a camping trip with some friends I haven't seen for qutie some time and I know I'm going to miss.

And can you imagine Bob getting up in the middle of the night to hit the bathroom? Every camper within a mile will be wide awake and wondering what the heck is going on. Cheap for shoes and slippers though.

OH no is right. Next thing we know when we go camping with Mel and Silverleeper, Mel will have a pair of those slippies. Hopefully, not Silver, but you never know .

Bob, do you wear those when you are driving or just around the campground? It's nice to be able to blend in at an Airstream ralley though. You can stand out in front of any of the trailers and no one will notice you, they'll just think you are part of the display

For some reason I fear that Zep has a pair of these...............and possibly Gene...........

About 40 years ago I had the starter replaced in a Saab station wagon at a garage in Buffalo, NY. Bob worked at that garage at about the same time, but I didn't know him at the time. There was a mechanic there with pink work boots with steel duck toes and that must have been him.

I don't care for the ducks, but pink is easy to find in the men's locker room. These are mine:

Gene's tell'n stories again....

I did work at Alternative Automotive,(it was the 70's already), it was in Buffalo, we did work on Saabs, and I may very well have worked on his Wagon.

But I wore these 24/7 for the duration.
