Nah, no bagpipes again this year, dangit. I did get the new Star Trek DVD. Probably better that way. I'm more of a space cadet than musician.

I feel your pain Jim. Since you live at least 1,500 miles from my ears, I was not worried about you getting bagpipes. Maybe you can rent some, though that would probably convince Susan never to get you bagpipes. You can hope for your birthday or President's Day. Good luck.

It was the late '90's and we were in St. Augustine walking through the old town and in the distance we heard this foul sound, unmistakably bagpipes played really badly. We went towards the noise, perhaps drawn by strange attraction of a trainwreck in action, and there was a street "musician" with his bagpipes. He was awful. People would cross the street to avoid him and hurry away. He was blissfully unaware of the aural disaster he was creating. We, too, hurried along. Two blocks away his wailing still assaulted us. All the shops had their doors closed even though it was a pleasant day, not hot or humid at all. We went inside on to rest our ears and the shopkeeper told us they had tried and tried to have him chased away to no avail. It was the only time I wanted the 1st Amendment repealed. You could even hear it inside, though not as loud. I have been forever traumatized.

But 30 years ago we were driving through the Pike NF, SW of Denver, on a quiet forest road and we heard bagpipes in the distance. Eventually we came upon a beautiful meadow and in the center of it was a man playing bagpipes. He was really good. It was a pleasure to hear him.

Unfortunately I have been scarred. I know bagpipes can be played well and I know it takes a lot of practice. Until then, it can be disturbing to be around.

Then there was the time a friend of mine won a lawsuit against him. He was still in law school and was elated at his first victory. I was a witness. We went back to his apartment (it had been a rent control case brought by his landlord) on the west side of Buffalo and to celebrate he took out his saxophone, an instrument he hadn't played in years. It wasn't as bad as the St. Augustine bagpipes, but I'm glad he decided to be a lawyer and not a street musician.

I hope Jim gets his bagpipes someday and I'm sure because he is an Airsteamer he will learn to play it well. When he has mastered it, I will be glad to listen, but not before. Go Jim!

Dang, Gene. Seems like you have a tough time finding fine music. In order to heal some of those scars, go directly to your favorite music store and purchase anything by Aaron Copeland. "Appalachian Spring" is one of my favorites. Any of his symphonies will do as well. Of course, you can't beat the Beatles.

Jim,

I do think Gene is a bit musically challenged, if I could I would introduce him
to my new Campfire Girl...

Bagpipes played well are beautiful and can bring a man to tears. Come to think of it bagpipes played poorly can too...Bring a man to tears that is.

We attended a dedication a few years ago where a Pipe and Drum Corp played. They were incredible and the audio doesn't do them justice.

Buy the CD..."My One And Only Thrill". It's a GREAT album. It really does work well around the campfire. Sandra & I really do like her work. A sooper young songwriter, all but "Over The Rainbow" are hers.

Check out some of her other cuts on that link, I think you'll agree.

The first album I got, "some lessons", was actually recorded in her hospital room as she was recuperating from the accident, some spunk...
