Yikes! S is just about everything, but at the moment it's for Socorro, NM, where I'd like to spend a few weeks later this year.

And that's because it's the closest place to Bosque del Apache that has a full-service RV park where you can even watch a TV in the evening! (And since I'd be going to the Bosque pretty often, I'd get to eat at the Buckhorn for my green-chile cheeseburger fixes.)

But back to Socorro, which is a really old place, dating from the exploration days of the dastardly Juan de Oņate in the late 16th century. (Woops, I accidently showed my attitude toward Oņate in that one, huh?) Before the arrival of the Spanish, it was inhabited by the Piros, who were kind enough at the time to feed the hungry Spaniards. (Hence the name Socorro, "help" or "aid.")

Ok, let's just forward a mere 500-some years, when I visited Socorro at an age at which I can remember how what happened. (As a kid, we lived not that far north of there, but I remember zilch of that other than the name of the town, and later on the way that my later friends in college butchered its pronunciation.)

A decade or so ago, I was assigned to visit several colleges and universities in NM for graduate recruiting. The visits to the small colleges were memorable: Absolutely no interest in graduate education, and a total waste of my time to go to those schools. Indeed, at those events, I was among the very few who represented graduate schools; the rest were military recruiters and recruiters from various small-scale businesses.

Next on the list was NM Tech in little old Socorro, and by that time I had very low expectations. So I walk into the hall and nearly fainted. All of the major national labs were there along with the likes of Microsoft and Intel, who were offering megabucks to students who'd agree to go to work for them immediately upon graduation. Holy smokes! But, of course, graduate recruiting there was also a failure. Think about it: I could offer them a scholarship for masters or doctoral studies involving a few thousand bucks a year. And Microsoft was offering a $50K+ bonus (in addition to a hefty salary) if they'd forget the whole grad school thing and go to work immediately. Duh.

So much for that story. I've revisited Socorro several times since then in my post-university days, but now it's all about photography. Bosque del Apache, of course, but also photography visits to nearby Magdalena and the really cool Very Large Array.

Enough is enough! Wish I could pack up the Airstream and leave now, but the toilet is still broken, and I have a couple of follow-up visits with my oncology people in the next few weeks. Durn!

If it's an E, then it's gotta stand for El Morro, New Mexico!

El Morro is actually an unincorporated town just outside of the Ramah Navajo Chapter of the Navajo Nation. It includes the Ancient Way Cafe, which itself includes a small and rustic RV park. But they make a pretty mean green chile cheeseburger, and their pies look delicious!

But most folks think of El Morro as the national monument, El Morro National Monument. Both town and monument receive their name, El Morro, from the cliff-faced mountain (hence the Spanish name meaning "the promontory"). For many centuries, travelers, including Native Americans, made a stop there because of the spring located at the base of the cliff. Many, again including Native Americans, etched their names into the cliff. The earliest European to do so was, once again, the dastardly Juan de Oņate in 1605; an image of his inscription is below:

The grafitti is almost as old as the original inscription!

Oh, and the national monument has its own no-reservation campground, though it looks to me like our 30' would fit into only one or two of the sites.

Dang! And I almost forgot the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary just down the highway toward Ramah a bit! That's where I took this picture:

Well, gosh, R is for Ranchos de Taos! That's where Ansel Adams took his famous photograph of the San Francisco de Asis mission church, also depicted by Georgia O'Keefe. Also where some good Airstreaming friends live. Also where we're thinking about moving to once we leave Angel Fire!
