hi darol...

first off, i LOVE the title of this thread...

really it wouldn't matter WHAT the topic is, the title just cracks me up!

it would be a great title for a quentin tarantino movie...

just imagine a group of beret wearing, trailer towing renegades beating up YOUNG people on bicycles...

no one was there (from this group) but darol...

so i trust his assessment that not being a 'real airstreamer' was a major issue...

i've experienced the same thing, and so have many others...

whether it's not being IN the dog club or IN the car club or IN the (insert group) whatever circle...

some folks can only see others inside their click as 'qualified buyers'...

of course darol,

IF you were wearing a muscle shirt that shows off your tattoos....

and a crips/bloods doo-rag,

that might have been part of their reluctance too...

you are one scary looking dude with that fur yodelers' hat on...

cheers

2AIR, I was dressed in blue levis and a grey shirt, NO HAT, and driving my silver and blue pickup, NOT the Pontiac, but there WAS that Oregon State Snowmobile Association sticker in the back window of the pickup.
Janet, Suppose they saw the Pontiac and Retropod?? That could have been the problem. Hope Area 33 stays protected from the fire. Darol

Just go to the next person who has one for sale... always gonna be somebody who has a "personal criteria" someone else doesn't meet... so what? It's their shortcoming, not yours.

Once bit by aluminitus, it becomes the relentless pursuit of the silver trophy... not the noise passing you by.

Style, Don't fret - not a common thing with sellers. This would have been my 10th Airstream and all but two were purchsed from private parties without any hassel. Darol

Ricky Bobby and The Hammer

You could always return with a ball peen hammer. Whoops, hailstorm

Seriously though, I think they did you dirty. I bought both of my trailers cash. I got hosed on the first one because there was no clear title. I did finally get it, but it took 14 months.

On the second trailer, I made sure the guy had the clear title in hand before I ever left my house. I paid him in cash. That was that.

If a person were to look at you and insinuate you weren't good enough to buy their trailer because you're not wearing a blue hat or have red numbers tatooed on your forehead, just tell them what Ricky Bobby told those who don't chew Big Red

If there's a title in hand, and there's cash on the table, and they won't deal, then they're messed up. The End.

There's no limit to the craziness out there and the people don't have to be 80 to 89. Since a 3rd party was involved, that person may have been extra paranoid because he didn't want to have the owners come back at him if anything went wrong. The problem with trying to understand irrational people is that you have to think just like them, and then you're irrational and might not remember how to come back from that place. It's pretty difficult to figure out if all the obstacles they put up were real to them or just some way of getting more from those Floridians.

If I really wanted the trailer and hadn't found anything else by the time these people come back, I guess I'd give it another shot. I think, if it seemed right to do so, I'd ask what was the problem? Did they think they could get more money? Maybe cutting through the weirdness would help. Maybe you should send them a beret as a peace offering.

When I've sold cars, I ask for cash—better than any check. No matter how you get paid, there's a way to screw you though. Counterfeit money, fake certified checks. Going to the buyer's bank is best, but not always possible (weekends, evenings, no local branches). When you sell a vehicle, take your plates off. Leaving them on encourages people not to register. On an interstate deal, it's difficult to transfer title, but you could have a "hold harmless" clause on a bill of sale, i.e., the buyer will hold harmless the seller should there be an accident subsequent to the moment the bill of sale is signed. In Colorado, the title serves as a bill of sale, so you'd have to draft another separate bill of sale with the hold harmless clause. The seller still could be sued, but would probably have recourse against the buyer. The real problem is there is no way to be absolutely safe in any deal. At some point you either have to trust the other guy or not and live with the consequences. At age 80, you certainly have had a good chance to have been screwed over by someone on something, so I guess they had a right to feel vulnerable.

Anyway, I love the title of this thread. I just had to read it.

I saw a security camera clip the other day of a young thug that tried to lift a few bucks out of the pocket of a senior citizen ahead of him in line at the Gas-n-Go.

The senior citizen was a retired Marine, ironworker, and Golden Glove champion.

The thug was lucky the store clerk pulled him away from the buzzsaw.

Distantdrummer said "C'mon Whitsend Would ya tell us more about this?
The rest of the story please."

Drummer - Not a lot more to share. I've slept a night or two since then, but if memory serves I forked over an agreed price for an '82 or '83 Excella that was in excellent shape all around, on the gentleman's agreement that this gypsy would produce the title the next day. My whole point in reliving this sad tale is that I'd hope others wouldn't be no trusting. I got a tad over 1/2 my money back, but my time spent trying to talk the man into being honest is worth something, I compensated a GIANT of a friend to go over there & try the intimidation route (that may sound more than it really was - my buddy liked his beer. No, I didn't hire a hit man for goodness sake), and - most folks option of last resort - the lawyer, also wasn't cheap. You can get court judgements all day & until the cows come home, but sleeze balls can & do ignore them too. I was lucky to get what I did back from him.

Moral? Ask a lot of questions, don't believe much of what you hear, test everything, ie check it out thourghly and if you decide to go ahead - keep your money in your pants until you are satisfied with all aspects of the deal and all is legal. Then deal only with the seller - no middle "persons".

Jim

2AIR, If THAT'S what's in store at the old folks' home/care center/nursing home, I feel a lot better about the possibilities of not making it that long - - it would probably kill me! I never was a "rocker" and don't want to start now.
Whitsend, I DID all those things, it WAS the owners who kiboshed the deal. All the middleman did was show me the trailer.
I'm still holding out slim hope of getting the trailer, but continuing to look at others in the meantime. Problem is, after you've seen the best, others just don't measure up. Darol

I think this entire post "Beaten down by old people" is a disgrace. I would request it be deleted.

You pride yourselves on being owners of "old Airsteams" often at great monetary cost and you have the audacity to criticize the original owners, who lived the once-in-a-lifetime, Caravan life.

They should be revered, they are living History and we should learn from them and be thankful.

(Remember my comments when you are that age, and someone refers to you, as "old people".)

P.S.
Obviously, will get much flack, don't care. If you want to kick me out of membership...fill your boots. Needed to say it, no respect is terrible.
